The Organization of the Priestly Divisions

King David organized the priests into 24 divisions for service in the sanctuary. Ezer was assigned the seventeenth division by lot.

1These were the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
2Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and they had no sons, so Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests.
3With the help of Zadok from the sons of Eleazar and Ahimelech from the sons of Ithamar, David divided them into their appointed order of service.
15the seventeenth to Hezir, the eighteenth to Happizzez,

Ezer's Lot

By lot, the seventeenth fell to Ezer, which determined his division's week of service in the sanctuary.

David's Arrangement for Temple Service

David established a structured system for Aaron's descendants through Zadok and Abiathar, where each division received its fixed time for service.

3With the help of Zadok from the sons of Eleazar and Ahimelech from the sons of Ithamar, David divided them into their appointed order of service.
4Since the sons of Eleazar had more men at the head of their families than the sons of Ithamar, they were divided accordingly: sixteen heads of ancestral houses from the sons of Eleazar, and eight from the sons of Ithamar.
5They divided them by lot, one group with the other, for there were officers of the sanctuary and officers of God among both the sons of Eleazar and the sons of Ithamar.
6Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a scribe from the Levites, recorded their names in the presence of the king, the officials, Zadok the priest, Ahimelech son of Abiathar, and the heads of the ancestral houses of the priests and the Levites—one ancestral house drawn for Eleazar, and one drawn for Ithamar.

Ezer Mentioned in Nehemiah's Covenant

A person or family named Hesir was among the priests and Levites who sealed the covenant to follow God's law during Nehemiah's time after the exile.

The Priests' Commitment under Nehemiah

Hesir's descendants were among those who committed themselves to keep God's commands and regulations when the people renewed their covenant with God after returning from Babylon.

1In view of all this, we are entering into a binding agreement, put in writing; and on the sealed document are the names of our officials, our Levites, and our priests.

29The rest of the people—the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the temple servants, and all who had separated themselves from the peoples of the lands in order to follow the Law of God, together with their wives, their sons, and their daughters, all who had the knowledge to understand—
