Jatniel was one of the gatekeepers who served at God's house in Jerusalem during King David's time. He was a son of Meshelemiah (also called Shelemiah), a Korahite who had responsibility for guarding the sanctuary. His role was to guard the entrances to the tabernacle and later the temple.
King David organized the gatekeeping service by casting lots, through which Jatniel and his family received their assigned watches and responsibilities.
As a Korahite, Jatniel was part of a long tradition of Levites entrusted with guarding God's sanctuary, an arrangement that dates back to the time of Moses.
19Shallum son of Kore, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah, and his kinsmen of his ancestral house, the Korahites, were in charge of the work of the service, guarding the thresholds of the tent, just as their fathers had guarded the entrance to the camp of the LORD.
