John (son of Mattathias)

Maccabean warrior and eldest son of Mattathias

John was the eldest son of the priest Mattathias and brother to Judas Maccabeus. He participated in the Jewish revolt against the Seleucid Empire and fought for religious freedom. John was killed by the sons of Jambris, a Nabataean tribe, during a mission.

The Revolt of Mattathias Begins

John joined his father Mattathias and his brothers as they fled to the mountains and started the revolt against the Seleucids after Mattathias refused to sacrifice to idols.

Participation in the Maccabean Revolt

John fought alongside his brothers in guerrilla warfare against the forces of Antiochus IV Epiphanes to regain religious freedom for the Jewish people.

Sent on a Mission

John was sent by his brother Jonathan to negotiate with the Nabateans to keep the Maccabees' belongings safe.

Killed by the Sons of Jambris

During the mission, John was ambushed and killed by the sons of Jambris, an enemy tribe. His death was later avenged by his brothers.
