Receiving Temple Treasures

Josabad was one of the Levites who received the silver, gold, and vessels brought from Babylon to the temple in Jerusalem. He helped weigh and record these valuable items.

33On the fourth day the silver, the gold, and the vessels were weighed out in the house of our God into the hands of Meremoth son of Uriah the priest, and with him Eleazar son of Phinehas, and with them the Levites Jozabad son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui.

Teaching the Law

Josabad was among the Levites who helped the people understand the law when Ezra read it aloud to the assembly. He explained the law to the people while they stood in their places.

7And Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah—the Levites—explained the Law to the people while they remained in their places.

Overseeing External Temple Work

Josabad had oversight of the external work at God's house, which involved practical management and administration of the temple's daily operations.

Participation in Ezra's reforms

Josabad was part of the group of Levites who supported Ezra's reform efforts to restore proper worship and adherence to the Law of Moses in Jerusalem.

23Among the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

The Dedication of Jerusalem's Wall

Josabad participated in the spiritual life of Jerusalem under Nehemiah's leadership and was among the prominent Levites who served in connection with the rebuilding and dedication.

44On that day men were appointed over the storerooms that served as treasuries for the contributions, the firstfruits, and the tithes, to gather into them from the fields of the towns the portions prescribed by the law for the priests and the Levites; for Judah rejoiced over the priests and the Levites who were serving.

45They kept the charge of their God and the charge of purification, as did the singers and the gatekeepers, according to the command of David and of Solomon his son.
