Me-Sahab

The Royal Woman of Edom

Tunnetaan myös nimellä: Mesahab, Me-zahab, Mezahab

PatriarkatMatriarch?

Me-Sahab was the daughter of Matred and the granddaughter of Me-Sahab (some translations interpret this differently). She is mentioned in the Bible as the mother of Hadar (or Hadad), one of the kings of Edom. She is one of the few women named in the Edomite king lists in Genesis and 1 Chronicles.

Mentioned in the List of Edomite Kings

Me-Sahab is mentioned as the daughter of Matred in connection with King Hadar's (Hadad's) lineage, the last king in the Edomite king list in Genesis.

39When Baal-Hanan son of Achbor died, Hadar succeeded him as king. His city was named Pau, and his wife's name was Mehetabel daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-Zahab.

Repeated in Chronicles

Me-Sahab's name is repeated in 1 Chronicles in the enumeration of the kings of Edom, where she is again identified as the daughter of Matred.

50When Baal-hanan died, Hadad reigned in his place; his city was named Pai, and his wife's name was Mehetabel daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-zahab.

The Kingdoms of Edom

Me-Sahab is linked to the royal lineage of Edom, which descends from Esau. The kings of Edom reigned before Israel had kings.

31These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the Israelites.
32Bela son of Beor became king in Edom; his city was named Dinhabah.
33When Bela died, Jobab son of Zerah, from Bozrah, succeeded him as king.

34When Jobab died, Husham, from the land of the Temanites, succeeded him as king.
35When Husham died, Hadad son of Bedad succeeded him as king. He defeated Midian in the country of Moab, and his city was named Avith.
36When Hadad died, Samlah from Masrekah succeeded him as king.
37When Samlah died, Shaul from Rehoboth on the River succeeded him as king.
38When Shaul died, Baal-Hanan son of Achbor succeeded him as king.
39When Baal-Hanan son of Achbor died, Hadar succeeded him as king. His city was named Pau, and his wife's name was Mehetabel daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-Zahab.

Descendants of Esau

The king list where Me-Sahab is mentioned is part of the broader account of Esau's descendants, who became the people of Edom.

1This is the family history of Esau, that is, Edom.
8So Esau settled in the hill country of Seir. Esau is Edom.
9This is the family history of Esau, the father of the Edomites, in the hill country of Seir.
