Rebuilding of Jerusalem's Wall

Meshobab is mentioned among those who took part in repairing the wall of Jerusalem after returning from exile in Babylon.

4Next to them Meremoth son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, made repairs. Next to them Meshullam son of Berechiah, son of Meshezabel, made repairs, and next to them Zadok son of Baana.

The Work Under Nehemiah's Leadership

During Nehemiah's organization of the rebuilding work, various families and groups were assigned specific sections of the wall. Meshobab and his fellow workers took part in this important national and spiritual project.

1Then Eliashib the high priest and his fellow priests set to work and rebuilt the Sheep Gate. They consecrated it and set its doors in place, and they consecrated the wall as far as the Tower of the Hundred, all the way to the Tower of Hananel.

2Next to him the men of Jericho built, and next to them Zaccur son of Imri.

3The Fish Gate was rebuilt by the sons of Hassenaah. They laid its beams and set its doors, its bolts, and its bars in place.

4Next to them Meremoth son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, made repairs. Next to them Meshullam son of Berechiah, son of Meshezabel, made repairs, and next to them Zadok son of Baana.

5Next to them the men of Tekoa made repairs, but their nobles would not put their shoulders to the work of their Lord.[fn: The Hebrew word can mean either their Lord (God) or their lords, that is, their supervisors.]

Completion of Jerusalem's Restoration

The wall around Jerusalem was completed in 52 days, despite opposition from enemies. This stood as a testimony to God's help and the people's unity.

15So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days.

16When all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us were afraid, and their confidence sank low, for they knew that this work had been accomplished by our God.

The People Renew Their Covenant

After the rebuilding of the wall, the people renewed their covenant with God, which was a central event in the period following their return from exile.

1In view of all this, we are entering into a binding agreement, put in writing; and on the sealed document are the names of our officials, our Levites, and our priests.

2On the sealed document were: Nehemiah the governor, son of Hacaliah, and Zedekiah,
וְעַ֖ל הַחֲתוּמִ֑ים נְחֶמְיָ֧ה הַתִּרְשָׁ֛תָא בֶּן־חֲכַלְיָ֖ה וְצִדְקִיָּֽה׃ ‬
3Seraiah, Azariah, Jeremiah,
