Meshullam was a prominent figure during the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls under Nehemiah's leadership. He was the son of Berechiah and actively contributed to the restoration work. The name Meshullam is borne by many individuals in the Bible, but the most well-known is the one who repaired two sections of the wall and whose daughter was married to Tobiah's son.

Repair of the Wall at the Old Gate

Meshullam, the son of Besodeiah, was among those who repaired the Old Gate in Jerusalem during Nehemiah's wall-repair project.

4Next to them Meremoth son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, made repairs. Next to them Meshullam son of Berechiah, son of Meshezabel, made repairs, and next to them Zadok son of Baana.
וְעַל־יָדָ֣ם הֶחֱזִ֗יק מְרֵמ֤וֹת בֶּן־אוּרִיָּה֙ בֶּן־הַקּ֔וֹץ ס וְעַל־יָדָ֣ם הֶחֱזִ֔יק מְשֻׁלָּ֥ם בֶּן־בֶּרֶכְיָ֖ה בֶּן־מְשֵׁיזַבְאֵ֑ל ס וְעַל־יָדָ֣ם הֶֽחֱזִ֔יק צָד֖וֹק בֶּֽן־בַּעֲנָֽא׃ ס ‬
6The Old Gate was repaired by Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah. They laid its beams and set its doors, its bolts, and its bars in place.
וְאֵת֩ שַׁ֨עַר הַיְשָׁנָ֜ה הֶחֱזִ֗יקוּ יֽוֹיָדָע֙ בֶּן־פָּסֵ֔חַ וּמְשֻׁלָּ֖ם בֶּן־בְּסֽוֹדְיָ֑ה הֵ֣מָּה קֵר֔וּהוּ וֽ͏ַיַּעֲמִ֙ידוּ֙ דַּלְתֹתָ֔יו וּמַנְעֻלָ֖יו וּבְרִיחָֽיו׃ ס ‬

Repair of Another Section of the Wall

Meshullam, the son of Berechiah, repaired a section of the wall directly opposite his own house, demonstrating his personal commitment to the rebuilding effort.

30Next to him Hananiah son of Shelemiah and Hanun, the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another section. Next to them Meshullam son of Berechiah made repairs opposite his living quarters.

Connection with Tobiah

Meshullam, the son of Berechiah, had given his daughter in marriage to Johanan, the son of Tobiah, who was one of Nehemiah's opponents. This created political complications.

18for many in Judah were bound to him by oath, since he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berechiah.

Participation in the Wall Dedication

Mesjullam was among the leading men who participated in the solemn dedication of the rebuilt wall in Jerusalem.

25Mattaniah, Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, and Akkub were gatekeepers, standing guard at the storerooms by the gates.

Presence at Ezra's Reading of the Law

A Mesjullam is mentioned among those who stood with Ezra when he read the law to the people by the Water Gate, marking a spiritual renewal.

4Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform built for the occasion. Beside him on his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; and on his left, Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.

Mesjullam Among Those Who Sent Away Foreign Wives

A Mesjullam is mentioned in connection with Ezra's reforms, where Israelite men who had taken foreign wives were required to separate from them.

15Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supported them.
