Mithredath (also known as Mithredath) was the treasurer under the Persian king Cyrus the Great. He was tasked with counting and delivering the sacred vessels from the temple in Jerusalem that Nebuchadnezzar had taken to Babylon, so they could be returned to the Jewish people. He plays a small but important role in the restoration of temple service in Jerusalem.

7King Cyrus also brought out the articles of the house of the LORD that Nebuchadnezzar had carried off from Jerusalem and placed in the temple of his own god.

8Cyrus king of Persia had them brought out by Mithredath the treasurer, who counted them out to Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah.

The Counting of the Temple Articles

Mithredath delivered gold and silver bowls, knives, cups, and basins—5400 items made of gold and silver in total—to be brought back to Jerusalem.

Cyrus's Decree on Rebuilding

Cyrus issued a decree that the temple in Jerusalem should be rebuilt and ordered that the sacred vessels be returned—which enabled Mithredath's role.

1In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, so that the word of the LORD spoken through Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, and he sent a proclamation throughout his whole kingdom, and also put it in writing:

וּבִשְׁנַ֣ת אַחַ֗ת לְכ֙וֹרֶשׁ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ פָּרַ֔ס לִכְל֥וֹת דְּבַר־יְהוָ֖ה מִפִּ֣י יִרְמְיָ֑ה הֵעִ֣יר יְהוָ֗ה אֶת־ר֙וּחַ֙ כֹּ֣רֶשׁ מֶֽלֶךְ־פָּרַ֔ס וַיַּֽעֲבֶר־קוֹל֙ בְּכָל־מַלְכוּת֔וֹ וְגַם־בְּמִכְתָּ֖ב לֵאמֹֽר׃ ‬

2"This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

3Whoever among you belongs to his people—may his God be with him—let him go up to Jerusalem in Judah and build the house of the LORD, the God of Israel, the God who is in Jerusalem.

Letter of Complaint to Artaxerxes

Another person named Mitredat (possibly a different individual) was among those who wrote a letter of complaint to King Artaxerxes to stop the rebuilding of Jerusalem.

7And in the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their associates wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia. The letter was written in Aramaic script and set out in the Aramaic language.

וּבִימֵ֣י אַרְתַּחְשַׁ֗שְׂתָּא כָּתַ֨ב בִּשְׁלָ֜ם מִתְרְדָ֤ת טָֽבְאֵל֙ וּשְׁאָ֣ר *כנותו **כְּנָוֺתָ֔יו עַל־*ארתחששתא **אַרְתַּחְשַׁ֖שְׂתְּ מֶ֣לֶךְ פָּרָ֑ס וּכְתָב֙ הַֽנִּשְׁתְּוָ֔ן כָּת֥וּב אֲרָמִ֖ית וּמְתֻרְגָּ֥ם אֲרָמִֽית׃ פ ‬

The Temple Vessels Arrive in Jerusalem

The holy temple vessels that Mitredat had handed over were brought back to Jerusalem by Sheshbazzar along with the returning exiles.
