The Covenant Between Abraham and Abimelech at Beersheba

Pikol was present as Abimelech's commander when Abimelech sought a covenant with Abraham. They made an agreement at Beersheba for peaceful coexistence.

22At that time Abimelech, together with Phicol the commander of his army, said to Abraham, "God is with you in everything you do.
23Now swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my offspring or with my posterity. Show to me and to the land where you have lived as a foreigner the same kindness I have shown to you.
24And Abraham said, "I swear it."
25Then Abraham confronted Abimelech about the well of water that Abimelech's servants had seized.
26Abimelech said, "I do not know who did this. You never told me, and I heard nothing of it until today."
27So Abraham took sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelech, and the two of them made a covenant.
28Abraham also set apart seven ewe lambs from the flock,
29and Abimelech asked him, "What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs you have set apart?"
30He answered, "Accept these seven ewe lambs from my hand as my witness that I dug this well."
31That is why the place was called Beersheba, because there the two of them swore an oath.
32When they had made the covenant at Beersheba, Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army set out and returned to the land of the Philistines.

Abimelech and Pikol Return to the Land of the Philistines

After the covenant was made, Abimelech and Pikol returned to the land of the Philistines, confirming the diplomatic nature of the visit.

32When they had made the covenant at Beersheba, Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army set out and returned to the land of the Philistines.

Abimelech and Pikol Visit Isaac

Pikol again accompanied Abimelech when they visited Isaac in Beersheba to make a covenant, because they saw that God was with Isaac.

26Then Abimelech came to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of his army.
27Isaac said to them, "Why have you come to me, since you hated me and sent me away from you?"
28They answered, "We have seen clearly that the LORD has been with you, so we said: Let there be a sworn agreement between us—between us and you—and let us make a covenant with you,

Isaac's Covenant with Abimelech in the Presence of Phicol

Isaac asked why they had come to him after sending him away, but Abimelech and Phicol sought peace. They made a covenant and celebrated with a meal.

29that you will do us no harm, just as we did not touch you but did you nothing but good and sent you away in peace. You are now blessed by the LORD."
30So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.
31Early in the morning they rose and exchanged oaths with one another. Then Isaac sent them off, and they left him in peace.

Departure After Making the Covenant with Isaac

After making the covenant, Isaac bid farewell to Abimelech and Phicol, and they left him in peace, securing peaceful relations between the groups.

31Early in the morning they rose and exchanged oaths with one another. Then Isaac sent them off, and they left him in peace.
32That same day Isaac's servants came and told him about the well they had dug, and said to him, "We have found water!"
33He named it Shibah; therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day. [Footnote: Shibah sounds like the Hebrew words for "oath" and "seven"; Beersheba means "well of the oath" or "well of seven."]
