Rizpah (Saul's concubine)

The Mourning Mother

Yhdistynyt kuningaskuntaMatriarchc. 1050–1000 BC

Rizpah was Saul's concubine and the mother of two of his sons. She is best known for her touching and steadfast vigil over the bodies of her dead sons after they were executed by the Gibeonites, an act that lasted several months and moved King David to give them a proper burial.

Mentioned as Saul's concubine

Rizpah is introduced as Saul's concubine and the mother of two of his sons, Armoni and Mephibosheth.

8So the king took the two sons of Rizpah daughter of Aiah, whom she had borne to Saul—Armoni and Mephibosheth—and the five sons of Michal daughter of Saul, whom she had borne to Adriel son of Barzillai the Meholathite. [^1] [^1]: The Hebrew text reads *Michal*; since Adriel married Saul's daughter Merab (1 Samuel 18:19) and Michal had no children (2 Samuel 6:23), some ancient manuscripts and many interpreters read *Merab* here.

Abner's alleged relationship with Rizpah

After Saul's death, Ish-bosheth accused the commander Abner of having slept with Rizpah, which led to a serious conflict and Abner's defection to David.

7Now Saul had a concubine named Rizpah daughter of Aiah. And Ish-bosheth said to Abner, "Why have you slept with my father's concubine?"
8Abner was furious at Ish-bosheth's words and said, "Am I a dog's head from Judah? To this very day I have shown loyalty to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers and his friends, and I have not handed you over to David—and now you charge me with an offense over this woman!

The Sons Handed Over to the Gibeonites

Because of Saul's breach of the covenant with the Gibeonites, Rizpah's two sons along with five other descendants of Saul were handed over to be executed.

1In the days of David there was a famine that lasted three years, year after year, and David sought the face of the LORD. The LORD said, "It is because of Saul and his bloodstained house, because he put the Gibeonites to death."
2So the king summoned the Gibeonites and spoke to them. Now the Gibeonites were not Israelites but a remnant of the Amorites, and the Israelites had sworn an oath to spare them; yet Saul had sought to strike them down in his zeal for Israel and Judah.
9He handed them over to the Gibeonites, who hanged them on the hill before the LORD. All seven of them fell together; they were put to death in the first days of the harvest, at the beginning of the barley harvest.

The Long Watch Over the Dead

Rizpah kept watch over the bodies from the beginning of the barley harvest until rain fell, protecting them from birds and wild animals—a period lasting several months.

10Then Rizpah daughter of Aiah took sackcloth and spread it out for herself on the rock. From the beginning of the harvest until the rain poured down on the bodies from the heavens, she did not let the birds of the sky settle on them by day or the wild animals by night.

David Gives the Dead a Dignified Burial

When David heard about Rizpah's faithful guarding, he was moved and ensured that all those executed, as well as the bones of Saul and Jonathan, were buried in the family tomb.

11When David was told what Rizpah daughter of Aiah, Saul's concubine, had done,
12he went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of his son Jonathan from the citizens of Jabesh Gilead, who had stolen them from the public square of Beth Shan, where the Philistines had hung them on the day they struck Saul down at Gilboa.
13He brought up from there the bones of Saul and the bones of his son Jonathan, and they also gathered the bones of those who had been hanged.
14They buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan in the land of Benjamin, at Zela, in the tomb of Kish his father, and they did everything the king commanded. After that, God answered prayer on behalf of the land.
