Shelemiah (also called Shelemiah) was the father of Jehucal (Jukal) and Nethaniah, and served in several roles connected to the prophet Jeremiah and the king's court in Judah. He is mentioned in various contexts in the book of Jeremiah, including as the father of messengers and as one sent to seize the prophet Jeremiah. The name means 'the Lord has repaid' and is borne by several individuals in the Old Testament.
3Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah son of Maaseiah the priest to Jeremiah the prophet with this message: "Please pray for us to the LORD our God."
26Instead the king ordered Jerahmeel, a son of the king, Seraiah son of Azriel, and Shelemiah son of Abdeel to arrest Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. But the LORD had hidden them.
1Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malchiah heard the words Jeremiah was speaking to all the people:
2"This is what the LORD says: Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, by famine, or by plague, but whoever goes out to the Chaldeans will live; he will escape with his life and survive.
4So the officials said to the king, "This man must be put to death. By speaking such words to them he is undermining the courage of the soldiers who are left in this city and of all the people. This man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but their ruin."
Irijah, son of Shallum and grandson of Hananiah, arrested the prophet Jeremiah at the Benjamin Gate and accused him of intending to defect to the Chaldeans.
13But when he reached the Benjamin Gate, an officer of the guard was on duty there, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah, and he seized Jeremiah the prophet and said, "You are deserting to the Chaldeans!"
14"That's a lie," Jeremiah said. "I am not deserting to the Chaldeans." But Irijah would not listen to him; he arrested Jeremiah and brought him to the officials.
13I put Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites in charge of the storerooms, with Hanan son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, as their assistant, for these men were considered trustworthy. Their duty was to distribute the supplies to their brothers.
