Shechem was the son of Hamor, the Hivite prince of the city of Shechem. He is known for having raped Jacob's daughter Dinah, which led to a bloody revenge action by Dinah's brothers Simeon and Levi, who killed all the men in the city of Shechem.

Shechem Violates Dinah

Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, saw Jacob's daughter Dinah, took her and lay with her by force. He then fell in love with her and wanted to marry her.

1Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land.

2And Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of that region, saw her; he seized her, lay with her, and violated her.

3And his soul clung to Dinah, Jacob's daughter; he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to her.

וַתִּדְבַּ֣ק נַפְשׁ֔וֹ בְּדִינָ֖ה בַּֽת־יַעֲקֹ֑ב וַיֶּֽאֱהַב֙ אֶת־הַֽנַּעֲרָ֔ וַיְדַבֵּ֖ר עַל־לֵ֥ב הַֽנַּעֲרָֽ׃ ‬

Shechem Asks for Dinah's Hand

Shechem asked his father Hamor to arrange the marriage with Dinah. Hamor went to Jacob to negotiate the marriage.

4So Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Get me this girl as my wife."

5Jacob heard that Shechem had defiled his daughter Dinah, but his sons were with his livestock in the field, so Jacob held his peace until they came home.

6Then Hamor, Shechem's father, went out to Jacob to speak with him.

8Hamor said to them, "My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.

Negotiations Over the Bride Price

Shechem offered to pay any bride price and gift that Jacob's sons demanded, because he wanted Dina as his wife.

11And Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give whatever you ask of me.

12Set the bride-price and the gift as high as you like, and I will pay whatever you demand. Only give me the girl as my wife."

The Demand for Circumcision

Jacob's sons set the condition that all the men in the city of Shechem must be circumcised. Shechem agreed to this demand because he loved Dina.

13Jacob's sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor with deceit, because Shechem had defiled their sister Dinah.

וַיַּעֲנ֨וּ בְנֵֽי־יַעֲקֹ֜ב אֶת־שְׁכֶ֨ם וְאֶת־חֲמ֥וֹר אָבִ֛יו בְּמִרְמָ֖ה וַיְדַבֵּ֑רוּ אֲשֶׁ֣ר טִמֵּ֔א אֵ֖ת דִּינָ֥ה אֲחֹתָֽם׃ ‬

14They said to them, "We cannot do such a thing—give our sister to a man who is uncircumcised. That would be a disgrace to us.

15We will consent to you on one condition only: that you become like us by having every male among you circumcised.

19The young man lost no time in doing what they asked, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter; and he was the most honored of all his father's household.

The Circumcision of Shechem's Men

Shechem and Hamor persuaded the men of the city to be circumcised, and all the men in the city were circumcised.

20So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of the city:

וַיָּבֹ֥א חֲמ֛וֹר וּשְׁכֶ֥ם בְּנ֖וֹ אֶל־שַׁ֣עַר עִירָ֑ם וַֽיְדַבְּר֛וּ אֶל־אַנְשֵׁ֥י עִירָ֖ם לֵאמֹֽר׃ ‬

21"These men are at peace with us. Let them settle in the land and trade in it; the land is large enough for them. We can take their daughters as our wives and give them our daughters.

22But the men will consent to live with us and become one people on this one condition: that every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.

24All the men who went out from the city gate listened to Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male was circumcised.

וַיִּשְׁמְע֤וּ אֶל־חֲמוֹר֙ וְאֶל־שְׁכֶ֣ם בְּנ֔וֹ כָּל־יֹצְאֵ֖י שַׁ֣עַר עִיר֑וֹ וַיִּמֹּ֙לוּ֙ כָּל־זָכָ֔ר כָּל־יֹצְאֵ֖י שַׁ֥עַר עִירֽוֹ׃ ‬

Simeon and Levi's Revenge

On the third day after the circumcision, when the men were at their weakest, Simeon and Levi entered the city and killed all the men, including Shechem and his father Hamor. They took Dina with them home.

25On the third day, while they were still in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords, came against the unsuspecting city, and killed every male.

וַיְהִי֩ בַיּ֨וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֜י בִּֽהְיוֹתָ֣ם כֹּֽאֲבִ֗ים וַיִּקְח֣וּ שְׁנֵֽי־בְנֵי־יַ֠עֲקֹב שִׁמְע֨וֹן וְלֵוִ֜י אֲחֵ֤י דִינָה֙ אִ֣ישׁ חַרְבּ֔וֹ וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ עַל־הָעִ֖יר בֶּ֑טַח וַיַּֽהַרְג֖וּ כָּל־זָכָֽר׃ ‬

26They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword, took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and left.

וְאֶת־חֲמוֹר֙ וְאֶת־שְׁכֶ֣ם בְּנ֔וֹ הָרְג֖וּ לְפִי־חָ֑רֶב וַיִּקְח֧וּ אֶת־דִּינָ֛ה מִבֵּ֥ית שְׁכֶ֖ם וַיֵּצֵֽאוּ׃ ‬

27Jacob's sons came upon the slain and plundered the city, because its men had defiled their sister.
