Shemeber

King of Zeboiim

Shemeber was the king of Zeboiim, one of the five cities on the Jordan Plain. He was among the kings who rebelled against King Chedorlaomer of Elam after serving as his vassals for twelve years. He took part in the battle in the Valley of Siddim, where he and his allies were defeated.

1In the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim,

4For twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

Alliance with the Kings of the Jordan Plain

Shemeber formed an alliance with Bera (king of Sodom), Birsha (king of Gomorrah), Shinab (king of Admah) and the king of Bela (Zoar) to fight against Kedorlaomer and his allies.

The Battle in the Valley of Siddim

Shemeber and his allies met Kedorlaomer and his four allied kings in battle at the Valley of Siddim (the Salt Sea valley), but were defeated.

8Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, that is, Zoar, marched out and drew up their battle lines against them in the Valley of Siddim—

9against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goiim, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar: four kings against five.

אֵ֣ת כְּדָרְלָעֹ֜מֶר מֶ֣לֶךְ עֵילָ֗ם וְתִדְעָל֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ גּוֹיִ֔ם וְאַמְרָפֶל֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ שִׁנְעָ֔ר וְאַרְי֖וֹךְ מֶ֣לֶךְ אֶלָּסָ֑ר אַרְבָּעָ֥ה מְלָכִ֖ים אֶת־הַחֲמִשָּֽׁה׃ ‬

Defeat and Flight

After the defeat, the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled and fell into the asphalt pits in the Valley of Siddim, while the survivors escaped to the mountains. The cities were plundered.

10Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, they fell into them, while the rest escaped to the hills.

11The victors seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their provisions, and went on their way.

וַ֠יִּקְחוּ אֶת־כָּל־רְכֻ֨שׁ סְדֹ֧ם וַעֲמֹרָ֛ה וְאֶת־כָּל־אָכְלָ֖ם וַיֵּלֵֽכוּ׃ ‬

Abraham's Intervention

After the defeat, Abram (Abraham) rescued Lot and the other captives taken by Kedorlaomer, and brought back all the goods that had been plundered from the cities of the plain.

14When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he mustered his trained men, born in his household, three hundred eighteen of them, and pursued as far as Dan.

15During the night he divided his forces against them, he and his servants, and attacked them and pursued them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.

16He recovered all the goods, and also brought back his kinsman Lot with his possessions, together with the women and the other people.
