The Doubter Who Confessed

Thomas, also called Didymus (the Twin), was one of Jesus' twelve apostles. He is known as 'the doubter' because he refused to believe in the resurrection until he had seen and touched Jesus' wounds. When Jesus appeared to him, he confessed: 'My Lord and my God!'

Let Us Die with Him

When Jesus intended to go to Judea despite the danger, Thomas courageously said to the others: 'Let us go, so that we may die with him!'

16Then Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with him."

The Question about the Way

At the Last Supper, Thomas asked: 'Lord, we do not know where you are going. How then can we know the way?'

6Jesus said to him, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Doubt

Thomas was not present when Jesus first appeared and said he would not believe until he could see and touch the wounds.

24Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came.

25So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe."

ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ οἱ ἄλλοι μαθηταί· Ἑωράκαμεν τὸν κύριον. ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Ἐὰν μὴ ἴδω ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτοῦ τὸν τύπον τῶν ἥλων καὶ βάλω τὸν δάκτυλόν μου εἰς τὸν τύπον τῶν ἥλων καὶ βάλω ⸂μου τὴν χεῖρα⸃ εἰς τὴν πλευρὰν αὐτοῦ, οὐ μὴ πιστεύσω.

My Lord and My God

Eight days later, Jesus appeared and invited Thomas to put his fingers into the wounds. Thomas confessed: 'My Lord and my God!'

26Eight days later his disciples were together again indoors, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you."

Καὶ μεθʼ ἡμέρας ὀκτὼ πάλιν ἦσαν ἔσω οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ Θωμᾶς μετʼ αὐτῶν. ἔρχεται ὁ Ἰησοῦς τῶν θυρῶν κεκλεισμένων, καὶ ἔστη εἰς τὸ μέσον καὶ εἶπεν· Εἰρήνη ὑμῖν.

27Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; look at my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."

εἶτα λέγει τῷ Θωμᾷ· Φέρε τὸν δάκτυλόν σου ὧδε καὶ ἴδε τὰς χεῖράς μου, καὶ φέρε τὴν χεῖρά σου καὶ βάλε εἰς τὴν πλευράν μου, καὶ μὴ γίνου ἄπιστος ἀλλὰ πιστός.

28Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!"
