The number 2750 appears in Numbers 4:36, where it indicates the count of men from the clan of Kohath who were registered for service at the Tabernacle. The Kohathites were responsible for the most holy objects—the ark of the covenant, the table of showbread, the lampstand, the altars, and their associated sacred utensils (Num 4:4–15). This census included men between the ages of 30 and 50, that is, those in their prime years for service. The recording of this precise number highlights the careful organization of the Levitical service and shows how each clan had its clearly defined role in managing the sanctuary. The clan of Kohath held a particularly prominent position among the Levites, since they carried the most holy objects during Israel's journey through the wilderness. The Kohathites were not allowed to touch the holy objects directly. Aaron and his sons were to cover them first before the Kohathites carried them, and violation of this rule resulted in death (Num 4:15, 18–20). Kohath was the son of Levi and the father of Amram, who in turn was the father of Moses and Aaron. The clan of Kohath thus had a direct family line to the Aaronic priesthood (Exod 6:16–20). The three Levitical clans—Kohath, Gershon, and Merari—were all registered separately (Num 4:34–49). In total, the serving Levites numbered 8580 men, of whom the Kohathites with their 2750 made up about one-third.*
