The Judgment on Israel's Pride
The Lord sends a word of judgment against Jacob and Israel because the people, in pride and arrogance, believe they can rebuild what has fallen with even better materials. God raises up enemies against them from east and west, cutting off both head and tail—leaders and false prophets who lead the people astray—and lets evil burn like fire throughout the land. Finally, brothers turn against one another: Manasseh against Ephraim and Ephraim against Manasseh, and together they turn against Judah, while the Lord's anger has not yet turned away and his hand is still stretched out.
Ésaïe 9,7-20
7The Lord has sent a word against Jacob, and it has fallen upon Israel.
דָּבָ֛ר שָׁלַ֥ח אֲדֹנָ֖י בְּיַעֲקֹ֑ב וְנָפַ֖ל בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
8All the people will know it—Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria—who say in pride and arrogance of heart:
וְיָדְעוּ֙ הָעָ֣ם כֻּלּ֔וֹ אֶפְרַ֖יִם וְיוֹשֵׁ֣ב שֹׁמְר֑וֹן בְּגַאֲוָ֛ה וּבְגֹ֥דֶל לֵבָ֖ב לֵאמֹֽר׃
9"The bricks have fallen, but we will rebuild with dressed stone; the sycamores have been felled, but we will put cedars in their place."
לְבֵנִ֥ים נָפָ֖לוּ וְגָזִ֣ית נִבְנֶ֑ה שִׁקְמִ֣ים גֻּדָּ֔עוּ וַאֲרָזִ֖ים נַחֲלִֽיף׃
10So the LORD raised up against him the adversaries of Rezin and stirred up his enemies:
וַיְשַׂגֵּ֧ב יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־צָרֵ֥י רְצִ֖ין עָלָ֑יו וְאֶת־אֹיְבָ֖יו יְסַכְסֵֽךְ׃
11Aram from the east and the Philistines from the west, and they devoured Israel with open mouths. Yet for all this his anger has not turned away; his hand is still stretched out.
אֲרָ֣ם מִקֶּ֗דֶם וּפְלִשְׁתִּים֙ מֵֽאָח֔וֹר וַיֹּאכְל֥וּ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּכָל־פֶּ֑ה בְּכָל־זֹאת֙ לֹא־שָׁ֣ב אַפּ֔וֹ וְע֖וֹד יָד֥וֹ נְטוּיָֽה׃
12Still the people did not return to him who struck them, and they did not seek the LORD of hosts.
וְהָעָ֥ם לֹא־שָׁ֖ב עַד־הַמַּכֵּ֑הוּ וְאֶת־יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת לֹ֥א דָרָֽשׁוּ׃ ס
13So the LORD cut off from Israel both head and tail, both palm branch and reed, in a single day.
וַיַּכְרֵ֨ת יְהוָ֜ה מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֗ל רֹ֧אשׁ וְזָנָ֛ב כִּפָּ֥ה וְאַגְמ֖וֹן י֥וֹם אֶחָֽד׃
14The elder and the man of rank are the head; the prophet who teaches lies is the tail.
זָקֵ֥ן וּנְשׂוּא־פָנִ֖ים ה֣וּא הָרֹ֑אשׁ וְנָבִ֥יא מֽוֹרֶה־שֶּׁ֖קֶר ה֥וּא הַזָּנָֽב׃
15Those who guide this people have led them astray, and those they guide are swallowed up.
וַיִּֽהְי֛וּ מְאַשְּׁרֵ֥י הָֽעָם־הַזֶּ֖ה מַתְעִ֑ים וּמְאֻשָּׁרָ֖יו מְבֻלָּעִֽים׃
16Therefore the Lord takes no delight in their young men, and he has no compassion on their orphans and widows; for everyone is godless and does evil, and every mouth speaks folly. Yet for all this his anger has not turned away; his hand is still stretched out.
עַל־כֵּ֨ן עַל־בַּחוּרָ֜יו לֹֽא־יִשְׂמַ֣ח ׀ אֲדֹנָ֗י וְאֶת־יְתֹמָ֤יו וְאֶת־אַלְמְנֹתָיו֙ לֹ֣א יְרַחֵ֔ם כִּ֤י כֻלּוֹ֙ חָנֵ֣ף וּמֵרַ֔ע וְכָל־פֶּ֖ה דֹּבֵ֣ר נְבָלָ֑ה בְּכָל־זֹאת֙ לֹא־שָׁ֣ב אַפּ֔וֹ וְע֖וֹד יָד֥וֹ נְטוּיָֽה׃
17For wickedness burns like a fire; it consumes briers and thorns. It sets the thickets of the forest ablaze, and they roll upward in a column of smoke.
כִּֽי־בָעֲרָ֤ה כָאֵשׁ֙ רִשְׁעָ֔ה שָׁמִ֥יר וָשַׁ֖יִת תֹּאכֵ֑ל וַתִּצַּת֙ בְּסִֽבְכֵ֣י הַיַּ֔עַר וַיִּֽתְאַבְּכ֖וּ גֵּא֥וּת עָשָֽׁן׃
18By the fury of the LORD of hosts the land is scorched, and the people have become fuel for the fire; no one spares his brother.
בְּעֶבְרַ֛ת יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת נֶעְתַּ֣ם אָ֑רֶץ וַיְהִ֤י הָעָם֙ כְּמַאֲכֹ֣לֶת אֵ֔שׁ אִ֥ישׁ אֶל־אָחִ֖יו לֹ֥א יַחְמֹֽלוּ׃
19They tear at what is on the right, but remain hungry; they devour what is on the left, but are not satisfied. Each one devours the flesh of his own arm:
וַיִּגְזֹ֤ר עַל־יָמִין֙ וְרָעֵ֔ב וַיֹּ֥אכַל עַל־שְׂמֹ֖אול וְלֹ֣א שָׂבֵ֑עוּ אִ֥ישׁ בְּשַׂר־זְרֹע֖וֹ יֹאכֵֽלוּ׃
20Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh; together they turn against Judah. Yet for all this his anger has not turned away; his hand is still stretched out.
מְנַשֶּׁ֣ה אֶת־אֶפְרַ֗יִם וְאֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ אֶת־מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה יַחְדָּ֥ו הֵ֖מָּה עַל־יְהוּדָ֑ה בְּכָל־זֹאת֙ לֹא־שָׁ֣ב אַפּ֔וֹ וְע֖וֹד יָד֥וֹ נְטוּיָֽה׃ ס
