Judges: Ibzan, Elon and Abdon
The chapter summarizes the lives and service of three lesser-known judges: Ibzan from Bethlehem, who had thirty sons and thirty daughters; Elon from Zebulun; and Abdon from Pirathon, who had forty sons and thirty grandsons. All three died and were buried in their hometowns.
Juges 12,8-15
8After him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.
וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֤ט אַֽחֲרָיו֙ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אִבְצָ֖ן מִבֵּ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃
9He had thirty sons, and thirty daughters whom he gave in marriage, and he brought in thirty daughters for his sons from elsewhere. He judged Israel seven years.
וַיְהִי־ל֞וֹ שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים בָּנִ֗ים וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים בָּנוֹת֙ שִׁלַּ֣ח הַח֔וּצָה וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים בָּנ֔וֹת הֵבִ֥יא לְבָנָ֖יו מִן־הַח֑וּץ וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֥ט אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל שֶׁ֥בַע שָׁנִֽים׃
10Then Ibzan died and was buried in Bethlehem.
וַיָּ֣מָת אִבְצָ֔ן וַיִּקָּבֵ֖ר בְּבֵ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃ פ
11After him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel, and he judged Israel ten years.
וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֤ט אֽ͏ַחֲרָיו֙ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֵיל֖וֹן הַזְּבֽוּלֹנִ֑י וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֥ט אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עֶ֥שֶׂר שָׁנִֽים׃
12Then Elon the Zebulunite died and was buried at Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.
וַיָּ֖מָת אֵל֣וֹן הַזְּבֽוּלֹנִ֑י וַיִּקָּבֵ֥ר בְּאַיָּל֖וֹן בְּאֶ֥רֶץ זְבוּלֻֽן׃ פ
13After him Abdon son of Hillel, from Pirathon, judged Israel.
וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֥ט אַחֲרָ֖יו אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל עַבְדּ֥וֹן בֶּן־הִלֵּ֖ל הַפִּרְעָתוֹנִֽי׃
14He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy donkeys. He judged Israel eight years.
וַיְהִי־ל֞וֹ אַרְבָּעִ֣ים בָּנִ֗ים וּשְׁלֹשִׁים֙ בְּנֵ֣י בָנִ֔ים רֹכְבִ֖ים עַל־שִׁבְעִ֣ים עֲיָרִ֑ם וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֥ט אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל שְׁמֹנֶ֥ה שָׁנִֽים׃
15Then Abdon son of Hillel, from Pirathon, died and was buried at Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.
וַיָּ֛מָת עַבְדּ֥וֹן בֶּן־הִלֵּ֖ל הַפִּרְעָתוֹנִ֑י וַיִּקָּבֵ֤ר בְּפִרְעָתוֹן֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ אֶפְרַ֔יִם בְּהַ֖ר הָעֲמָלֵקִֽי׃ פ
