Elijah Prays for Rain on Carmel
After defeating the prophets of Baal, Elijah earnestly prays for rain on top of Mount Carmel. The servant is sent seven times to look toward the sea, and on the seventh time a small cloud rises, followed by heavy rain that ends the long drought.
1 Rois 18,41-46
41Then Elijah said to Ahab, "Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain."
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלִיָּ֙הוּ֙ לְאַחְאָ֔ב עֲלֵ֖ה אֱכֹ֣ל וּשְׁתֵ֑ה כִּי־ק֖וֹל הֲמ֥וֹן הַגָּֽשֶׁם׃
42So Ahab went up to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Mount Carmel, bent down to the ground, and put his face between his knees.
וַיַּעֲלֶ֥ה אַחְאָ֖ב לֶאֱכֹ֣ל וְלִשְׁתּ֑וֹת וְאֵ֨לִיָּ֜הוּ עָלָ֨ה אֶל־רֹ֤אשׁ הַכַּרְמֶל֙ וַיִּגְהַ֣ר אַ֔רְצָה וַיָּ֥שֶׂם פָּנָ֖יו בֵּ֥ין *ברכו **בִּרְכָּֽיו׃
43"Go up and look toward the sea," he told his servant. The servant went up and looked. "There is nothing," he said. Elijah told him, "Go back seven times."
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶֽל־נַעֲר֗וֹ עֲלֵֽה־נָא֙ הַבֵּ֣ט דֶּֽרֶךְ־יָ֔ם וַיַּ֙עַל֙ וַיַּבֵּ֔ט וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֵ֣ין מְא֑וּמָה וַיֹּ֕אמֶר שֻׁ֖ב שֶׁ֥בַע פְּעָמִֽים׃
44The seventh time he reported, "Look, a cloud as small as a man's hand is rising from the sea." Elijah said, "Go and tell Ahab, 'Harness your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.'"
וֽ͏ַיְהִי֙ בַּשְּׁבִעִ֔ית וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הִנֵּה־עָ֛ב קְטַנָּ֥ה כְּכַף־אִ֖ישׁ עֹלָ֣ה מִיָּ֑ם וַיֹּ֗אמֶר עֲלֵ֨ה אֱמֹ֤ר אֶל־אַחְאָב֙ אֱסֹ֣ר וָרֵ֔ד וְלֹ֥א יַעַצָרְכָ֖ה הַגָּֽשֶׁם׃
45Before long the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, and a heavy rain came on. Ahab mounted his chariot and rode to Jezreel.
וַיְהִ֣י ׀ עַד־כֹּ֣ה וְעַד־כֹּ֗ה וְהַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ הִֽתְקַדְּרוּ֙ עָבִ֣ים וְר֔וּחַ וַיְהִ֖י גֶּ֣שֶׁם גָּד֑וֹל וַיִּרְכַּ֥ב אַחְאָ֖ב וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ יִזְרְעֶֽאלָה׃
46The hand of the LORD came upon Elijah; he tucked his cloak into his belt and ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
וְיַד־יְהוָ֗ה הָֽיְתָה֙ אֶל־אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ וַיְשַׁנֵּ֖ס מָתְנָ֑יו וַיָּ֙רָץ֙ לִפְנֵ֣י אַחְאָ֔ב עַד־בֹּאֲכָ֖ה יִזְרְעֶֽאלָה׃
