Jesus on Herod and the Lament over Jerusalem
The Pharisees warn Jesus that Herod wants to kill him. Jesus calls Herod a fox and says he will finish his work on the third day, for a prophet cannot perish outside Jerusalem. He laments over the city that kills the prophets and says their house will be left desolate until they say, 'Blessed is he who comes.'
Luc 13,31-35
31At that very hour some Pharisees came to him and said, "Leave this place and go somewhere else; Herod wants to kill you."
Ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ⸀ὥρᾳ προσῆλθάν τινες Φαρισαῖοι λέγοντες αὐτῷ· Ἔξελθε καὶ πορεύου ἐντεῦθεν, ὅτι Ἡρῴδης θέλει σε ἀποκτεῖναι.
32He replied, "Go and tell that fox: 'Look, I am driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.'
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Πορευθέντες εἴπατε τῇ ἀλώπεκι ταύτῃ· Ἰδοὺ ἐκβάλλω δαιμόνια καὶ ἰάσεις ⸀ἀποτελῶ σήμερον καὶ αὔριον, καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ τελειοῦμαι.
33Yet I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day, for it cannot be that a prophet should die outside Jerusalem.
πλὴν δεῖ με σήμερον καὶ αὔριον καὶ τῇ ἐχομένῃ πορεύεσθαι, ὅτι οὐκ ἐνδέχεται προφήτην ἀπολέσθαι ἔξω Ἰερουσαλήμ.
34Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you—how often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing!
Ἰερουσαλὴμ Ἰερουσαλήμ, ἡ ἀποκτείνουσα τοὺς προφήτας καὶ λιθοβολοῦσα τοὺς ἀπεσταλμένους πρὸς αὐτήν— ποσάκις ἠθέλησα ἐπισυνάξαι τὰ τέκνα σου ὃν τρόπον ὄρνις τὴν ἑαυτῆς νοσσιὰν ὑπὸ τὰς πτέρυγας, καὶ οὐκ ἠθελήσατε.
35Look, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"
ἰδοὺ ἀφίεται ὑμῖν ὁ οἶκος ⸀ὑμῶν. λέγω ⸀δὲ ⸀ὑμῖν, οὐ μὴ ⸂ἴδητέ με⸃ ἕως ⸂ἥξει ὅτε⸃ εἴπητε· Εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου.
