The Lord's Servant Becomes a Light for the Nations

The Lord's servant describes how the Lord called him from his mother's womb and made his mouth like a sharp sword. Although he has labored in vain, his reward is with God. The Lord expands the servant's mission from restoring the tribes of Jacob to becoming a light for the nations, so that salvation reaches to the ends of the earth. The deeply despised servant will be honored by kings and rulers, because of the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen him Isaiah 49:1-7.

Ésaïe 49,1-7

1Listen to me, you coastlands; pay attention, you distant peoples. The LORD called me from the womb; while I was still in my mother's body he spoke my name.
2He made my mouth like a sharpened sword; in the shadow of his hand he hid me. He made me a polished arrow and concealed me in his quiver.
3He said to me, "You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will show my glory."
4But I said, "I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing, for emptiness. Yet surely my cause rests with the LORD, and my reward with my God."
5And now the LORD speaks—he who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, so that Israel might be gathered to him; and I am honored in the eyes of the LORD, for my God has been my strength—
6he says: "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant, only to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel who are preserved. I will make you a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth."
7This is what the LORD says—the Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One—to him who is despised, abhorred by the nation, the servant of rulers: "Kings will see and rise, princes will see and bow down, because of the LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you."
