Cursed and Blessed: The Heart's Deceit Before the Lord
Jeremiah conveys the Lord's judgment over Judah's sin, which is engraved on the tablet of the heart. He proclaims a curse upon those who trust in humans and a blessing upon those who set their hope in the Lord. The heart is deceitful and incurable, but the Lord searches it and repays each according to their deeds. The prophet himself prays for healing, deliverance, and protection from his persecutors on the day of disaster.
Jérémie 17,1-18
1The sin of Judah is written with an iron stylus, engraved with a diamond point on the tablet of their heart and on the horns of your altars,
חַטַּ֣את יְהוּדָ֗ה כְּתוּבָ֛ה בְּעֵ֥ט בַּרְזֶ֖ל בְּצִפֹּ֣רֶן שָׁמִ֑יר חֲרוּשָׁה֙ עַל־ל֣וּחַ לִבָּ֔ם וּלְקַרְנ֖וֹת מִזְבְּחוֹתֵיכֶֽם׃
2while their children remember their altars and their Asherah poles beside a green tree, on the high hills.
כִּזְכֹּ֤ר בְּנֵיהֶם֙ מִזְבְּחוֹתָ֔ם וַאֲשֵׁרֵיהֶ֖ם עַל־עֵ֣ץ רַֽעֲנָ֑ן עַ֖ל גְּבָע֥וֹת הַגְּבֹהֽוֹת׃
3My mountain in the open country: your wealth and all your treasures I will hand over as plunder, along with your high places, because of the sin committed throughout your territory.
הֲרָרִי֙ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה חֵילְךָ֥ כָל־אוֹצְרוֹתֶ֖יךָ לָבַ֣ז אֶתֵּ֑ן בָּמֹתֶ֕יךָ בְּחַטָּ֖את בְּכָל־גְּבוּלֶֽיךָ׃
4By your own doing you will let go of the inheritance I gave you, and I will make you serve your enemies in a land you do not know, for you have kindled a fire in my anger that will burn forever.
וְשָׁמַטְתָּ֗ה וּבְךָ֙ מִנַּחֲלָֽתְךָ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָתַ֣תִּי לָ֔ךְ וְהַעֲבַדְתִּ֙יךָ֙ אֶת־אֹ֣יְבֶ֔יךָ בָּאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹֽא־יָדָ֑עְתָּ כִּֽי־אֵ֛שׁ קְדַחְתֶּ֥ם בְּאַפִּ֖י עַד־עוֹלָ֥ם תּוּקָֽד׃ ס
5This is what the LORD says: Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who makes flesh his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD.
כֹּ֣ה ׀ אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה אָר֤וּר הַגֶּ֙בֶר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִבְטַ֣ח בָּֽאָדָ֔ם וְשָׂ֥ם בָּשָׂ֖ר זְרֹע֑וֹ וּמִן־יְהוָ֖ה יָס֥וּר לִבּֽוֹ׃
6He will be like a shrub in the wasteland; he will not see when good comes. He will live in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one dwells.
וְהָיָה֙ כְּעַרְעָ֣ר בָּֽעֲרָבָ֔ה וְלֹ֥א יִרְאֶ֖ה כִּי־יָ֣בוֹא ט֑וֹב וְשָׁכַ֤ן חֲרֵרִים֙ בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר אֶ֥רֶץ מְלֵחָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א תֵשֵֽׁב׃ ס
7Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.
בָּר֣וּךְ הַגֶּ֔בֶר אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִבְטַ֖ח בַּֽיהוָ֑ה וְהָיָ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה מִבְטַחֽוֹ׃
8He will be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots toward the stream. It has no fear when the heat comes; its leaves stay green. It is not anxious in a year of drought, and it never stops bearing fruit.
וְהָיָ֞ה כְּעֵ֣ץ ׀ שָׁת֣וּל עַל־מַ֗יִם וְעַל־יוּבַל֙ יְשַׁלַ֣ח שָֽׁרָשָׁ֔יו וְלֹ֤א *ירא **יִרְאֶה֙ כִּֽי־יָ֣בֹא חֹ֔ם וְהָיָ֥ה עָלֵ֖הוּ רַֽעֲנָ֑ן וּבִשְׁנַ֤ת בַּצֹּ֙רֶת֙ לֹ֣א יִדְאָ֔ג וְלֹ֥א יָמִ֖ישׁ מֵעֲשׂ֥וֹת פֶּֽרִי׃
9The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?
עָקֹ֥ב הַלֵּ֛ב מִכֹּ֖ל וְאָנֻ֣שׁ ה֑וּא מִ֖י יֵדָעֶֽנּוּ׃
10I, the LORD, search the heart and test the mind, to reward each person according to his ways, according to what his deeds deserve.
אֲנִ֧י יְהוָ֛ה חֹקֵ֥ר לֵ֖ב בֹּחֵ֣ן כְּלָי֑וֹת וְלָתֵ֤ת לְאִישׁ֙ *כדרכו **כִּדְרָכָ֔יו כִּפְרִ֖י מַעֲלָלָֽיו׃ ס
11Like a partridge that hatches eggs it did not lay is the one who gains riches unjustly. In the middle of his days they will desert him, and in the end he will prove to be a fool.
קֹרֵ֤א דָגַר֙ וְלֹ֣א יָלָ֔ד עֹ֥שֶׂה עֹ֖שֶׁר וְלֹ֣א בְמִשְׁפָּ֑ט בַּחֲצִ֤י *ימו **יָמָיו֙ יַעַזְבֶ֔נּוּ וּבְאַחֲרִית֖וֹ יִהְיֶ֥ה נָבָֽל׃
12A glorious throne, exalted from the beginning, is the place of our sanctuary.
כִּסֵּ֣א כָב֔וֹד מָר֖וֹם מֵֽרִאשׁ֑וֹן מְק֖וֹם מִקְדָּשֵֽׁנוּ׃
13LORD, hope of Israel, all who forsake you will be put to shame. Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust, for they have abandoned the LORD, the spring of living water.
מִקְוֵ֤ה יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ יְהוָ֔ה כָּל־עֹזְבֶ֖יךָ יֵבֹ֑שׁוּ *יסורי **וְסוּרַי֙ בָּאָ֣רֶץ יִכָּתֵ֔בוּ כִּ֥י עָזְב֛וּ מְק֥וֹר מַֽיִם־חַיִּ֖ים אֶת־יְהוָֽה׃ ס
14Heal me, LORD, and I will be healed; save me, and I will be saved, for you are my praise.
רְפָאֵ֤נִי יְהוָה֙ וְאֵ֣רָפֵ֔א הוֹשִׁיעֵ֖נִי וְאִוָּשֵׁ֑עָה כִּ֥י תְהִלָּתִ֖י אָֽתָּה׃
15Look, they keep saying to me, "Where is the word of the LORD? Let it come now!"
הִנֵּה־הֵ֕מָּה אֹמְרִ֖ים אֵלָ֑י אַיֵּ֥ה דְבַר־יְהוָ֖ה יָ֥בוֹא נָֽא׃
16But I have not run away from being a shepherd in your service, nor have I longed for the day of disaster. You know it: whatever came from my lips was there before your face.
וַאֲנִ֞י לֹא־אַ֣צְתִּי ׀ מֵרֹעֶ֣ה אַחֲרֶ֗יךָ וְי֥וֹם אָנ֛וּשׁ לֹ֥א הִתְאַוֵּ֖יתִי אַתָּ֣ה יָדָ֑עְתָּ מוֹצָ֣א שְׂפָתַ֔י נֹ֥כַח פָּנֶ֖יךָ הָיָֽה׃
17Do not become a terror to me; you are my refuge in the day of trouble.
אַל־תִּֽהְיֵה־לִ֖י לִמְחִתָּ֑ה מֽ͏ַחֲסִי־אַ֖תָּה בְּי֥וֹם רָעָֽה׃
18Let my persecutors be put to shame, but do not let me be put to shame. Let them be terrified, but do not let me be terrified. Bring on them the day of disaster; destroy them with double destruction.
יֵבֹ֤שׁוּ רֹדְפַי֙ וְאַל־אֵבֹ֣שָׁה אָ֔נִי יֵחַ֣תּוּ הֵ֔מָּה וְאַל־אֵחַ֖תָּה אָ֑נִי הָבִ֤יא עֲלֵיהֶם֙ י֣וֹם רָעָ֔ה וּמִשְׁנֶ֥ה שִׁבָּר֖וֹן שָׁבְרֵֽם׃ ס
