Jeremiah's Personal Lament and God's Promise
The prophet Jeremiah expresses his deep pain and loneliness to God, asking why his wound is not healed. God responds with a call to repentance and a promise to make the prophet an unyielding bronze wall that cannot be overcome, and to deliver him from the hand of the wicked Jeremiah 15:10-21.
Jérémie 15,10-21
10Woe to me, my mother, that you gave me birth—a man of strife and contention to the whole land! I have not lent, nor have I borrowed, yet everyone curses me.
אֽוֹי־לִ֣י אִמִּ֔י כִּ֣י יְלִדְתִּ֗נִי אִ֥ישׁ רִ֛יב וְאִ֥ישׁ מָד֖וֹן לְכָל־הָאָ֑רֶץ לֹֽא־נָשִׁ֥יתִי וְלֹא־נָֽשׁוּ־בִ֖י כֻּלֹּ֥ה מְקַלְלַֽונִי׃ ס
11The LORD said: Surely I will set you free for a good purpose; surely I will make the enemy plead with you in a time of disaster, in a time of distress.
אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה אִם־לֹ֥א *שרותך **שֵֽׁרִיתִ֖יךָ לְט֑וֹב אִם־ל֣וֹא ׀ הִפְגַּ֣עְתִּֽי בְךָ֗ בְּעֵ֥ת רָעָ֛ה וּבְעֵ֥ת צָרָ֖ה אֶת־הָאֹיֵֽב׃
12Can iron be broken—iron from the north—or bronze?
הֲיָרֹ֨עַ בַּרְזֶ֧ל ׀ בַּרְזֶ֛ל מִצָּפ֖וֹן וּנְחֹֽשֶׁת׃
13Your wealth and your treasures I will give away as plunder, without price, because of all your sins throughout your territory.
חֵילְךָ֧ וְאוֹצְרוֹתֶ֛יךָ לָבַ֥ז אֶתֵּ֖ן לֹ֣א בִמְחִ֑יר וּבְכָל־חַטֹּאותֶ֖יךָ וּבְכָל־גְּבוּלֶֽיךָ׃
14I will make you serve your enemies in a land you do not know, for my anger has kindled a fire that will burn against you.
וְהַֽעֲבַרְתִּי֙ אֶת־אֹ֣יְבֶ֔יךָ בְּאֶ֖רֶץ לֹ֣א יָדָ֑עְתָּ כִּֽי־אֵ֛שׁ קָדְחָ֥ה בְאַפִּ֖י עֲלֵיכֶ֥ם תּוּקָֽד׃ ס
15You know, LORD—remember me and care for me; take vengeance for me on those who persecute me. In your patience, do not take me away; know that I bear reproach for your sake.
אַתָּ֧ה יָדַ֣עְתָּ יְהוָ֗ה זָכְרֵ֤נִי וּפָקְדֵ֙נִי֙ וְהִנָּ֤קֶם לִי֙ מֵרֹ֣דְפַ֔י אַל־לְאֶ֥רֶךְ אַפְּךָ֖ תִּקָּחֵ֑נִי דַּ֕ע שְׂאֵתִ֥י עָלֶ֖יךָ חֶרְפָּֽה׃
16When your words came, I ate them; your word became my joy and the delight of my heart, for I bear your name, LORD God of hosts.
נִמְצְא֤וּ דְבָרֶ֙יךָ֙ וָאֹ֣כְלֵ֔ם וַיְהִ֤י *דבריך **דְבָֽרְךָ֙ לִ֔י לְשָׂשׂ֖וֹן וּלְשִׂמְחַ֣ת לְבָבִ֑י כִּֽי־נִקְרָ֤א שִׁמְךָ֙ עָלַ֔י יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י צְבָאֽוֹת׃ ס
17I never sat in the company of revelers to make merry. I sat alone because your hand was on me, for you had filled me with indignation.
לֹֽא־יָשַׁ֥בְתִּי בְסוֹד־מְשַׂחֲקִ֖ים וָֽאֶעְלֹ֑ז מִפְּנֵ֤י יָֽדְךָ֙ בָּדָ֣ד יָשַׁ֔בְתִּי כִּֽי־זַ֖עַם מִלֵּאתָֽנִי׃ ס
18Why is my pain unending and my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? You have become to me like a deceptive brook, like waters that cannot be trusted.
לָ֣מָּה הָיָ֤ה כְאֵבִי֙ נֶ֔צַח וּמַכָּתִ֖י אֲנוּשָׁ֑ה מֵֽאֲנָה֙ הֵֽרָפֵ֔א הָי֨וֹ תִֽהְיֶ֥ה לִי֙ כְּמ֣וֹ אַכְזָ֔ב מַ֖יִם לֹ֥א נֶאֱמָֽנוּ׃ ס
19Therefore this is what the LORD says: If you turn back, I will restore you, and you shall stand before me. If you separate the precious from the worthless, you shall be as my mouth. Let them turn to you, but you must not turn to them.
לָכֵ֞ן כֹּֽה־אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה אִם־תָּשׁ֤וּב וַאֲשִֽׁיבְךָ֙ לְפָנַ֣י תַּֽעֲמֹ֔ד וְאִם־תּוֹצִ֥יא יָקָ֛ר מִזּוֹלֵ֖ל כְּפִ֣י תִֽהְיֶ֑ה יָשֻׁ֤בוּ הֵ֙מָּה֙ אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְאַתָּ֖ה לֹֽא־תָשׁ֥וּב אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃
20To this people I will make you a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to save you and deliver you, declares the LORD.
וּנְתַתִּ֜יךָ לָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֗ה לְחוֹמַ֤ת נְחֹ֙שֶׁת֙ בְּצוּרָ֔ה וְנִלְחֲמ֥וּ אֵלֶ֖יךָ וְלֹא־י֣וּכְלוּ לָ֑ךְ כִּֽי־אִתְּךָ֥ אֲנִ֛י לְהוֹשִֽׁיעֲךָ֥ וּלְהַצִּילֶ֖ךָ נְאֻם־יְהוָֽה׃
21I will rescue you from the hand of the wicked and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.
וְהִצַּלְתִּ֖יךָ מִיַּ֣ד רָעִ֑ים וּפְדִתִ֖יךָ מִכַּ֥ף עָרִצִֽים׃ פ
