Jesus in the synagogue at Nazareth
Jesus comes to Nazareth where he was raised, enters the synagogue on the Sabbath, and reads from the book of Isaiah: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me ... to proclaim a year of favor from the Lord." He rolls up the scroll and says that this scripture has been fulfilled today. The people are amazed at first and ask if he is not Joseph's son, but when he reminds them that no prophet is accepted in his hometown and refers to Elijah being sent to the widow in Zarephath and Elisha who cleansed the Syrian Naaman, they become furious. They drive him out of the city to throw him off a cliff, but he walks right through the crowd and leaves.
Luc 4,16-30
16He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom, and stood up to read.
Καὶ ἦλθεν ⸀εἰς Ναζαρά, οὗ ἦν τεθραμμένος, καὶ εἰσῆλθεν κατὰ τὸ εἰωθὸς αὐτῷ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῶν σαββάτων εἰς τὴν συναγωγήν, καὶ ἀνέστη ἀναγνῶναι.
17The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him, and unrolling it he found the place where it was written:
καὶ ἐπεδόθη αὐτῷ βιβλίον ⸂τοῦ προφήτου Ἠσαΐου⸃ καὶ ⸀ἀναπτύξας τὸ βιβλίον εὗρεν τὸν τόπον οὗ ἦν γεγραμμένον·
18"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are crushed,
Πνεῦμα κυρίου ἐπʼ ἐμέ, οὗ εἵνεκεν ἔχρισέν με εὐαγγελίσασθαι πτωχοῖς, ἀπέσταλκέν ⸀με κηρύξαι αἰχμαλώτοις ἄφεσιν καὶ τυφλοῖς ἀνάβλεψιν, ἀποστεῖλαι τεθραυσμένους ἐν ἀφέσει,
19to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
κηρύξαι ἐνιαυτὸν κυρίου δεκτόν.
20Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. Every eye in the synagogue was fixed on him.
καὶ πτύξας τὸ βιβλίον ἀποδοὺς τῷ ὑπηρέτῃ ἐκάθισεν· καὶ πάντων ⸂οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ⸃ ἦσαν ἀτενίζοντες αὐτῷ.
21He began to speak to them: "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."
ἤρξατο δὲ λέγειν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ὅτι Σήμερον πεπλήρωται ἡ γραφὴ αὕτη ἐν τοῖς ὠσὶν ὑμῶν.
22They all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that came from his mouth. And they said, "Isn't this Joseph's son?"
καὶ πάντες ἐμαρτύρουν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐθαύμαζον ἐπὶ τοῖς λόγοις τῆς χάριτος τοῖς ἐκπορευομένοις ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔλεγον· ⸂Οὐχὶ υἱός ἐστιν Ἰωσὴφ οὗτος⸃;
23So he said to them, "No doubt you will quote me this proverb: 'Doctor, heal yourself.' You will say, 'Do here in your hometown what we have heard you did in Capernaum.'
καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Πάντως ἐρεῖτέ μοι τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην· Ἰατρέ, θεράπευσον σεαυτόν· ὅσα ἠκούσαμεν γενόμενα ⸂εἰς τὴν Καφαρναοὺμ⸃ ποίησον καὶ ὧδε ἐν τῇ πατρίδι σου.
24Truly I tell you," he went on, "no prophet is accepted in his hometown.
εἶπεν δέ· Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐδεὶς προφήτης δεκτός ἐστιν ἐν τῇ πατρίδι αὐτοῦ.
25In truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut for three years and six months and a severe famine came over the whole land.
ἐπʼ ἀληθείας δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν, πολλαὶ χῆραι ἦσαν ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις Ἠλίου ἐν τῷ Ἰσραήλ, ὅτε ἐκλείσθη ὁ οὐρανὸς ⸀ἐπὶ ἔτη τρία καὶ μῆνας ἕξ, ὡς ἐγένετο λιμὸς μέγας ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν,
26Yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.
καὶ πρὸς οὐδεμίαν αὐτῶν ἐπέμφθη Ἠλίας εἰ μὴ εἰς Σάρεπτα τῆς ⸀Σιδωνίας πρὸς γυναῖκα χήραν.
27And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian."
καὶ πολλοὶ λεπροὶ ἦσαν ⸂ἐν τῷ Ἰσραὴλ ἐπὶ Ἐλισαίου τοῦ προφήτου⸃, καὶ οὐδεὶς αὐτῶν ἐκαθαρίσθη, εἰ μὴ Ναιμὰν ὁ Σύρος.
28When they heard this, everyone in the synagogue was filled with rage.
καὶ ἐπλήσθησαν πάντες θυμοῦ ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ ἀκούοντες ταῦτα,
29They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, intending to throw him off the cliff.
καὶ ἀναστάντες ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω τῆς πόλεως, καὶ ἤγαγον αὐτὸν ἕως ὀφρύος τοῦ ὄρους ἐφʼ οὗ ἡ πόλις ⸂ᾠκοδόμητο αὐτῶν, ὥστε⸃ κατακρημνίσαι αὐτόν·
30But he walked right through the middle of them and went on his way.
αὐτὸς δὲ διελθὼν διὰ μέσου αὐτῶν ἐπορεύετο.
