Job's Restoration
God speaks to Job out of the storm and reveals His almighty power through creation, Behemoth and Leviathan. Job humbles himself and repents in dust and ashes. God rebukes Job's friends, and after Job prays for them, God restores everything Job had lost, doublefold.
Job 38,1-42,17
1Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm:
2Who is this that darkens counsel with words empty of knowledge?
3Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall inform me.
4Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you have understanding.
5Who set its measurements? Surely you know. Who stretched the measuring line across it?
6On what were its footings sunk, or who laid its cornerstone,
7while the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8Who shut the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb,
9when I made the clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling band,
10when I fixed my limit for it and set its bars and doors in place,
11when I said, 'This far you may come and no farther; here your proud waves must halt'?
12Have you ever commanded the morning or shown the dawn its place,

13that it might seize the edges of the earth and shake the wicked out of it?
14The earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its features stand out like a garment.
15The wicked are denied their light, and the upraised arm is broken.
16Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep?
17Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Have you seen the gates of deepest darkness?

20that you might take them to their own territory and know the paths to their dwellings?
21Surely you know, for you were already born! The number of your days is so great!
22Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or seen the storehouses of the hail,
23which I have reserved for times of trouble, for days of battle and war?

24What is the way to the place where light is parceled out, or where the east wind is scattered over the earth?

25Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain, and a path for the thunderbolt,
26to water a land where no one lives, a desert with no human in it,
27to satisfy the waste and desolate ground and make the grass sprout there?
28Does the rain have a father? Who fathered the drops of dew?

29From whose womb comes the ice? Who gives birth to the frost of heaven,

31Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades or loosen the cords of Orion?
32Can you bring out the constellations in their season or lead out the Bear with her cubs?
33Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set up their rule over the earth?
34Can you raise your voice to the clouds and cover yourself with a flood of water?
35Do you send the lightning bolts on their way? Do they report to you, 'Here we are'?
36Who put wisdom in the hidden parts, or gave understanding to the mind?[^1]
[^1]: The Hebrew words rendered *hidden parts* and *mind* are uncertain; they may instead refer to birds, as in "the ibis" and "the rooster."

41Who provides food for the raven when its young cry out to God and wander about for lack of food?

2Can you count the months they carry their young? Do you know the time of their delivery,
3when they crouch down and bring forth their offspring, and their labor pains are past?
4Their young grow strong and thrive in the open; they leave and do not return.

5Who set the wild donkey free? Who untied his ropes?

8He roams the hills for pasture, searching out every green thing.

14She leaves her eggs on the ground and lets the dust keep them warm,

16She is hard on her young, as if they were not hers; her labor is wasted, and she has no fear,
17for God made her forget wisdom and gave her no share of understanding.

18Yet when she rises up to run, she laughs at the horse and its rider.

22He laughs at fear and is not dismayed; he does not turn back from the sword.
23The quiver rattles against his side, along with the flashing spear and lance.
24Trembling with fury, he devours the ground; he cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds.

25At the blast of the horn he cries, "Aha!" He catches the scent of battle far off, the thunder of commanders and the war cry.

28He dwells on the cliff and lodges there; the rocky crag is his fortress.
29From there he spies out his prey; his eyes see it far away.

1Then the LORD answered Job:

2Will the one who argues with the Almighty accept correction? Let him who accuses God give an answer.
3Then Job answered the LORD:
4See, I am of little worth—what can I reply to you? I lay my hand over my mouth.
5I have spoken once, and I will not answer again; twice, and I will say no more.
6Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm:

7Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you will inform me.
8Would you really annul my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself?
9Do you have an arm like God's? Can you thunder with a voice like his?
10Then deck yourself with majesty and grandeur; clothe yourself in glory and splendor.
11Pour out the fury of your anger; look on every proud man and bring him low.
12Look on every proud man and humble him; crush the wicked where they stand.

14Then even I would praise you, that your own right hand can save you.

15Look now at Behemoth, which I made along with you; he eats grass like an ox.

19He is the first of God's works; only his Maker can bring a sword against him.
20For the mountains yield him their produce, and all the wild animals play there.

21He lies down under the lotus trees, hidden among the reeds of the marsh.
22The lotus trees cover him with their shade; the willows of the stream surround him.
23Though the river rages, he is not alarmed; he is unshaken though the Jordan surges against his mouth.

25Can you haul in Leviathan with a hook, or tie down his tongue with a rope?
26Can you run a cord through his nose, or pierce his jaw with a barb?

28Will he make a covenant with you, so you can take him as a slave for life?
29Will you play with him as with a bird, or leash him for your servant girls?
30Will traders haggle over him? Will they divide him among the merchants?
31Can you fill his hide with harpoons, or his head with fishing spears?
32Lay a hand on him—remember the battle; you will never try again!
1Look, any hope of taking him is false; the mere sight of him lays a man low.
2No one is fierce enough to rouse him. Who then can stand before me?
3Who has ever given me anything first, that I should repay him? Whatever is under all the heavens is mine.

4I will not keep silent about his limbs, his mighty strength, his graceful frame.
5Who can strip off his outer coat? Who can approach him within his double armor?* *Or 'within his double bridle'; the Hebrew word means 'bridle,' often understood here as the creature's jaws or double row of scales.
6Who can pry open the doors of his face? His teeth are ringed with terror.
7His pride is his rows of shields, shut up tight as with a seal.
8Each one presses against the next; not even air can pass between them.
9They cling to one another, locked so fast they cannot be pulled apart.
10His snorting flashes out light; his eyes are like the first rays of dawn.
11Out of his mouth go blazing torches; sparks of fire shoot from him.
12Smoke streams from his nostrils, as from a pot boiling over a fire of reeds.
13His breath sets coals ablaze, and flame leaps from his mouth.
14Strength has its lair in his neck, and dismay dances before him.
15The folds of his flesh cling together, cast solid, immovable.
16His heart is hard as stone, hard as a lower millstone.
17When he rises up, the mighty are terrified; at the crashing they shrink back.
18The sword that reaches him accomplishes nothing, nor does spear or dart or javelin.
19He counts iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood.
20The arrow cannot drive him off; sling stones are nothing but chaff to him.
21He reckons the club as stubble, and laughs at the whir of the spear.
22His underside is jagged potsherds; he leaves the mud furrowed like a threshing sledge.
23He makes the deep boil like a pot; he churns the sea into a jar of ointment.
24Behind him he leaves a shining wake; you would think the deep had turned white with age.
25Nothing on earth is his equal, a creature made without fear.
26He surveys all that is lofty; he is king over every proud beast.
1Then Job answered the LORD:
2"I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
3'Who is this that obscures counsel without knowledge?' Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, wonders beyond me that I did not know.
4'Listen now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you shall inform me.'
5I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye has seen you.
6Therefore I despise myself, and I repent in dust and ashes."[^1]
[^1]: The Hebrew verb has no stated object; it may also be rendered "I take back my words" or "I yield."
7After the LORD had spoken these words to Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite: "My anger burns against you and your two friends, for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.
8Now take seven bulls and seven rams, go to my servant Job, and offer a burnt offering for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer and not deal with you according to your folly, for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has."
9So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the LORD had told them, and the LORD accepted Job's prayer.
10And when Job prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his fortunes; indeed, the LORD gave him twice as much as he had before.
11Then all his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before came and ate with him in his house. They consoled and comforted him over all the trouble the LORD had brought upon him, and each one gave him a piece of silver and a gold ring.[^1]
[^1]: Hebrew *qesitah*, an ancient unit of money of unknown weight.
12The LORD blessed the latter part of Job's life more than the first. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand donkeys.
13He also had seven sons and three daughters.
14He named the first Jemimah, the second Keziah, and the third Keren-happuch.
15Nowhere in all the land were there women as beautiful as Job's daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance among their brothers.
16After this Job lived a hundred and forty years, and he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation.
17And so Job died, old and full of days.
