Lament over Pharaoh and Egypt
In the twelfth year Ezekiel is commanded to chant a lament over Pharaoh, king of Egypt. Pharaoh is compared to a young lion among the nations and to a sea monster in the waters that stirs up the seas with its feet. The Lord will cast His net over him, draw him up, and throw him onto dry land, where birds and wild animals will feed on him. His flesh will be scattered across the mountains, and his blood will water the earth. The heavens will grow dark, the stars will lose their light, and the kings of the nations will tremble when the king of Babylon comes with a sword against Egypt. The land will be laid waste, and the daughters of the nations will sing a lament over the fall of Egypt.
Ézéchiel 32,1-16
1In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:
וַֽיְהִי֙ בִּשְׁתֵּ֣י עֶשְׂרֵ֣ה שָׁנָ֔ה בִּשְׁנֵי־עָשָׂ֥ר חֹ֖דֶשׁ בְּאֶחָ֣ד לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ הָיָ֥ה דְבַר־יְהוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃
2Son of man, raise a lament over Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him: You thought yourself a lion among the nations, but you are like a monster in the seas. You thrashed about in your streams, muddied the water with your feet, and fouled their channels.
בֶּן־אָדָ֗ם שָׂ֤א קִינָה֙ עַל־פַּרְעֹ֣ה מֶֽלֶךְ־מִצְרַ֔יִם וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֔יו כְּפִ֥יר גּוֹיִ֖ם נִדְמֵ֑יתָ וְאַתָּה֙ כַּתַּנִּ֣ים בַּיַּמִּ֔ים וַתָּ֣גַח בְּנַהֲרוֹתֶ֗יךָ וַתִּדְלַח־מַ֙יִם֙ בְּרַגְלֶ֔יךָ וַתִּרְפֹּ֖ס נַהֲרוֹתָֽם׃
3Thus says the Lord GOD: I will spread my net over you before an assembly of many peoples, and they will haul you up in my dragnet.
כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה וּפָרַשְׂתִּ֤י עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ אֶת־רִשְׁתִּ֔י בִּקְהַ֖ל עַמִּ֣ים רַבִּ֑ים וְהֶעֱל֖וּךָ בְּחֶרְמִֽי׃
4I will fling you down on the land, hurl you out on the open field. I will make every bird of the sky settle on you, and I will glut the beasts of the whole earth with you.
וּנְטַשְׁתִּ֣יךָ בָאָ֔רֶץ עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה אֲטִילֶ֑ךָ וְהִשְׁכַּנְתִּ֤י עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ כָּל־ע֣וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וְהִשְׂבַּעְתִּ֥י מִמְּךָ֖ חַיַּ֥ת כָּל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
5I will strew your flesh on the mountains and fill the valleys with your remains.
וְנָתַתִּ֥י אֶת־בְּשָׂרְךָ֖ עַל־הֶֽהָרִ֑ים וּמִלֵּאתִ֥י הַגֵּאָי֖וֹת רָמוּתֶֽךָ׃
6I will drench the land with your flowing blood, all the way to the mountains, and the ravines will be filled with you.
וְהִשְׁקֵיתִ֨י אֶ֧רֶץ צָפָתְךָ֛ מִדָּמְךָ֖ אֶל־הֶֽהָרִ֑ים וַאֲפִקִ֖ים יִמָּלְא֥וּן מִמֶּֽךָּ׃
7When you are snuffed out, I will cover the heavens and darken their stars. I will veil the sun with a cloud, and the moon will not give its light.
וְכִסֵּיתִ֤י בְכַבּֽוֹתְךָ֙ שָׁמַ֔יִם וְהִקְדַּרְתִּ֖י אֶת־כֹּֽכְבֵיהֶ֑ם שֶׁ֚מֶשׁ בֶּעָנָ֣ן אֲכַסֶּ֔נּוּ וְיָרֵ֖חַ לֹא־יָאִ֥יר אוֹרֽוֹ׃
8All the shining lights of the heavens I will darken over you, and I will bring darkness upon your land, declares the Lord GOD.
כָּל־מְא֤וֹרֵי אוֹר֙ בַּשָּׁמַ֔יִם אַקְדִּירֵ֖ם עָלֶ֑יךָ וְנָתַ֤תִּי חֹ֙שֶׁךְ֙ עַֽל־אַרְצְךָ֔ נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃
9I will trouble the hearts of many peoples when I carry the news of your ruin among the nations, into lands you have never known.
וְהִ֨כְעַסְתִּ֔י לֵ֖ב עַמִּ֣ים רַבִּ֑ים בַּהֲבִיאִ֤י שִׁבְרְךָ֙ בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם עַל־אֲרָצ֖וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־יְדַעְתָּֽם׃
10I will make many peoples appalled at you, and their kings will shudder with horror because of you when I brandish my sword before their faces. Again and again they will tremble, each for his own life, on the day of your downfall.
וַהֲשִׁמּוֹתִ֨י עָלֶ֜יךָ עַמִּ֣ים רַבִּ֗ים וּמַלְכֵיהֶם֙ יִשְׂעֲר֤וּ עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ שַׂ֔עַר בְּעוֹפְפִ֥י חַרְבִּ֖י עַל־פְּנֵיהֶ֑ם וְחָרְד֤וּ לִרְגָעִים֙ אִ֣ישׁ לְנַפְשׁ֔וֹ בְּי֖וֹם מַפַּלְתֶּֽךָ׃ ס
11For thus says the Lord GOD: The sword of the king of Babylon will come upon you.
כִּ֛י כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֖ר אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה חֶ֥רֶב מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶ֖ל תְּבוֹאֶֽךָ׃
12By the swords of warriors—the most ruthless of nations, all of them—I will bring down your hordes. They will ravage the pride of Egypt, and all her hordes will be destroyed.
בְּחַרְב֤וֹת גִּבּוֹרִים֙ אַפִּ֣יל הֲמוֹנֶ֔ךָ עָרִיצֵ֥י גוֹיִ֖ם כֻּלָּ֑ם וְשָֽׁדְדוּ֙ אֶת־גְּא֣וֹן מִצְרַ֔יִם וְנִשְׁמַ֖ד כָּל־הֲמוֹנָֽהּ׃
13I will wipe out all her cattle beside the abundant waters. No human foot will stir them again, and no hoof of cattle will muddy them.
וְהַֽאֲבַדְתִּי֙ אֶת־כָּל־בְּהֶמְתָּ֔הּ מֵעַ֖ל מַ֣יִם רַבִּ֑ים וְלֹ֨א תִדְלָחֵ֤ם רֶֽגֶל־אָדָם֙ ע֔וֹד וּפַרְס֥וֹת בְּהֵמָ֖ה לֹ֥א תִדְלָחֵֽם׃
14Then I will let their waters settle and make their streams flow like oil, declares the Lord GOD.
אָ֚ז אַשְׁקִ֣יעַ מֵֽימֵיהֶ֔ם וְנַהֲרוֹתָ֖ם כַּשֶּׁ֣מֶן אוֹלִ֑יךְ נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃
15When I make the land of Egypt a desolation, a land stripped of all that filled it, when I strike down all who live in it, then they will know that I am the LORD.
בְּתִתִּי֩ אֶת־אֶ֨רֶץ מִצְרַ֜יִם שְׁמָמָ֣ה וּנְשַׁמָּ֗ה אֶ֚רֶץ מִמְּלֹאָ֔הּ בְּהַכּוֹתִ֖י אֶת־כָּל־י֣וֹשְׁבֵי בָ֑הּ וְיָדְע֖וּ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃
16This is a lament, and it shall be chanted; the daughters of the nations shall chant it. Over Egypt and all her hordes they shall chant it, declares the Lord GOD.
קִינָ֥ה הִיא֙ וְק֣וֹנְנ֔וּהָ בְּנ֥וֹת הַגּוֹיִ֖ם תְּקוֹנֵ֣נָּה אוֹתָ֑הּ עַל־מִצְרַ֤יִם וְעַל־כָּל־הֲמוֹנָהּ֙ תְּקוֹנֵ֣נָּה אוֹתָ֔הּ נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃ פ
