The Parable of the Faithful and Wicked Servant
In response to Peter's question, Jesus tells about a faithful and wise steward who is put in charge of everything the master owns, and about a wicked servant who thinks the master will be delayed, mistreats the other servants, and is severely punished when the master returns unexpectedly.
Luc 12,41-48
41Peter said, "Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?"
Εἶπεν ⸀δὲ ὁ Πέτρος· Κύριε, πρὸς ἡμᾶς τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην λέγεις ἢ καὶ πρὸς πάντας;
42And the Lord answered, "Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his household staff to give them their food at the proper time?
⸂καὶ εἶπεν⸃ ὁ κύριος· Τίς ἄρα ἐστὶν ὁ πιστὸς οἰκονόμος, ⸀ὁ φρόνιμος, ὃν καταστήσει ὁ κύριος ἐπὶ τῆς θεραπείας αὐτοῦ τοῦ διδόναι ἐν καιρῷ ⸀τὸ σιτομέτριον;
43Blessed is that servant whom the master finds doing so when he comes.
μακάριος ὁ δοῦλος ἐκεῖνος, ὃν ἐλθὼν ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ εὑρήσει ποιοῦντα οὕτως·
44Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
ἀληθῶς λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐπὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς ὑπάρχουσιν αὐτοῦ καταστήσει αὐτόν.
45But suppose that servant says in his heart, 'My master is taking his time in coming,' and he begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk—
ἐὰν δὲ εἴπῃ ὁ δοῦλος ἐκεῖνος ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ· Χρονίζει ὁ κύριός μου ἔρχεσθαι, καὶ ἄρξηται τύπτειν τοὺς παῖδας καὶ τὰς παιδίσκας, ἐσθίειν τε καὶ πίνειν καὶ μεθύσκεσθαι,
46The master of that servant will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not know. He will cut him in pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
ἥξει ὁ κύριος τοῦ δούλου ἐκείνου ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ᾗ οὐ προσδοκᾷ καὶ ἐν ὥρᾳ ᾗ οὐ γινώσκει, καὶ διχοτομήσει αὐτὸν καὶ τὸ μέρος αὐτοῦ μετὰ τῶν ἀπίστων θήσει.
47The servant who knew his master's will and did not get ready or act on it will be beaten with many blows.
ἐκεῖνος δὲ ὁ δοῦλος ὁ γνοὺς τὸ θέλημα τοῦ κυρίου ⸀αὐτοῦ καὶ μὴ ἑτοιμάσας ⸀ἢ ποιήσας πρὸς τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ δαρήσεται πολλάς·
48But the one who did not know, and did what deserves punishment, will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from the one entrusted with much, even more will be demanded.
ὁ δὲ μὴ γνοὺς ποιήσας δὲ ἄξια πληγῶν δαρήσεται ὀλίγας. παντὶ δὲ ᾧ ἐδόθη πολύ, πολὺ ζητηθήσεται παρʼ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ᾧ παρέθεντο πολύ, περισσότερον αἰτήσουσιν αὐτόν.
