The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree
A man had a fig tree in his vineyard that had not borne fruit for three years, and he wanted to cut it down. The gardener asked for one more year to care for it before the decision was made.
Luc 13,6-9
6Then he told this parable: "A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it but found none.
Ἔλεγεν δὲ ταύτην τὴν παραβολήν. Συκῆν εἶχέν τις ⸂πεφυτευμένην ἐν τῷ ἀμπελῶνι αὐτοῦ⸃, καὶ ἦλθεν ζητῶν καρπὸν ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ οὐχ εὗρεν.
7So he said to the vineyard keeper, 'Look, for three years now I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree and have found none. Cut it down. Why should it go on using up the soil?'
εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς τὸν ἀμπελουργόν· Ἰδοὺ τρία ἔτη ⸂ἀφʼ οὗ⸃ ἔρχομαι ζητῶν καρπὸν ἐν τῇ συκῇ ταύτῃ καὶ οὐχ εὑρίσκω· ⸀ἔκκοψον αὐτήν· ἱνατί καὶ τὴν γῆν καταργεῖ;
8But the gardener answered him, 'Sir, leave it one more year, and let me dig around it and put manure on it.
ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς λέγει αὐτῷ· Κύριε, ἄφες αὐτὴν καὶ τοῦτο τὸ ἔτος, ἕως ὅτου σκάψω περὶ αὐτὴν καὶ βάλω κόπρια·
9If it bears fruit next year, well and good; if not, then cut it down.'"
κἂν μὲν ποιήσῃ καρπὸν ⸂εἰς τὸ μέλλον— εἰ δὲ μήγε,⸃ ἐκκόψεις αὐτήν.
