Moab's Judgment and the Messianic Hope
A prophetic vision of Moab's downfall due to pride, where the land is destroyed and its people flee, yet with a glimmer of hope for a righteous king who will sit on a throne in grace within David's tent.
Ésaïe 16,1-14
1Send lambs to the ruler of the land, from Sela through the wilderness to the mountain of the daughter of Zion.
2Like fluttering birds driven from the nest, so are the daughters of Moab at the fords of the Arnon.
3"Give counsel, render judgment; make your shadow like night at high noon. Hide the outcasts; do not betray the fugitive.
4Let my outcasts dwell among you, Moab; be a shelter for them from the destroyer. When the oppressor is no more, when destruction has ceased and the one who tramples has vanished from the land,
5then a throne will be established in steadfast love, and on it will sit in faithfulness, in the tent of David, one who judges and seeks justice and is swift to do righteousness."
6We have heard of the pride of Moab—how great it is—of his arrogance, his pride, and his fury; but his boasting is empty.
7Therefore Moab wails for Moab; all of them wail. For the raisin cakes of Kir-hareseth they moan, utterly stricken.
8For the fields of Heshbon have withered, and the vine of Sibmah. The lords of the nations have trampled down its choice branches, which reached as far as Jazer and strayed into the wilderness; its shoots spread abroad and crossed over the sea.
9Therefore I weep with the weeping of Jazer for the vine of Sibmah; I drench you with my tears, O Heshbon and Elealeh, for over your summer fruit and your harvest the shout of the enemy has fallen.
10Joy and gladness are taken away from the orchard; no one sings or shouts in the vineyards. No one treads out wine in the presses; I have silenced the shouting.
11Therefore my inmost parts moan like a harp for Moab, and my heart for Kir-heres.
12And when Moab appears, when he wears himself out on the high place and comes to his sanctuary to pray, it will do him no good.
13This is the word that the LORD spoke concerning Moab in time past.
14But now the LORD has spoken, saying: "Within three years, as a hired worker counts them, the glory of Moab will be brought into contempt, despite all its vast multitude; and the remnant will be very small and feeble."
