Noah's Vineyard and the Curse on Canaan
After the flood, Noah began to farm the land and planted a vineyard. He drank some of the wine, became drunk, and lay uncovered in his tent. Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father's nakedness and told his brothers about it, while Shem and Japheth walked backward into the tent and covered their father without looking at him. When Noah woke up and learned what had happened, he cursed Canaan to be a servant of servants among his brothers, but he blessed the God of Shem and prayed that Japheth would have room and live in Shem's tents.
Genèse 9,20-27
20Noah, a man of the soil, was the first to plant a vineyard.
וַיָּ֥חֶל נֹ֖חַ אִ֣ישׁ הֽ͏ָאֲדָמָ֑ה וַיִּטַּ֖ע כָּֽרֶם׃
21He drank some of the wine, became drunk, and lay uncovered inside his tent.
וַיֵּ֥שְׁתְּ מִן־הַיַּ֖יִן וַיִּשְׁכָּ֑ר וַיִּתְגַּ֖ל בְּת֥וֹךְ אָהֳלֹֽה׃
22Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father's nakedness and told his two brothers outside.
וַיַּ֗רְא חָ֚ם אֲבִ֣י כְנַ֔עַן אֵ֖ת עֶרְוַ֣ת אָבִ֑יו וַיַּגֵּ֥ד לִשְׁנֵֽי־אֶחָ֖יו בַּחֽוּץ׃
23So Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it across their shoulders, and walked in backward to cover their father's nakedness. Their faces were turned away, so that they did not see their father's nakedness.
וַיִּקַּח֩ שֵׁ֨ם וָיֶ֜פֶת אֶת־הַשִּׂמְלָ֗ה וַיָּשִׂ֙ימוּ֙ עַל־שְׁכֶ֣ם שְׁנֵיהֶ֔ם וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ אֲחֹ֣רַנִּ֔ית וַיְכַסּ֕וּ אֵ֖ת עֶרְוַ֣ת אֲבִיהֶ֑ם וּפְנֵיהֶם֙ אֲחֹ֣רַנִּ֔ית וְעֶרְוַ֥ת אֲבִיהֶ֖ם לֹ֥א רָאֽוּ׃
24When Noah awoke from his wine and learned what his youngest son had done to him,
וַיִּ֥יקֶץ נֹ֖חַ מִיֵּינ֑וֹ וַיֵּ֕דַע אֵ֛ת אֲשֶׁר־עָ֥שָׂה־ל֖וֹ בְּנ֥וֹ הַקָּטָֽן׃
25he said, "Cursed be Canaan! He will be the lowest of slaves to his brothers."
וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אָר֣וּר כְּנָ֑עַן עֶ֥בֶד עֲבָדִ֖ים יִֽהְיֶ֥ה לְאֶחָֽיו׃
26He also said, "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem! May Canaan be his slave.
וַיֹּ֕אמֶר בָּר֥וּךְ יְהֹוָ֖ה אֱלֹ֣הֵי שֵׁ֑ם וִיהִ֥י כְנַ֖עַן עֶ֥בֶד לָֽמוֹ׃
27May God extend Japheth's territory, and may he dwell in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be his slave."
יַ֤פְתְּ אֱלֹהִים֙ לְיֶ֔פֶת וְיִשְׁכֹּ֖ן בְּאָֽהֳלֵי־שֵׁ֑ם וִיהִ֥י כְנַ֖עַן עֶ֥בֶד לָֽמוֹ׃
