Paul
Exhortations on Sanctification and Brotherly Love
Paul exhorts the believers in Thessalonica that God's will is their sanctification: they must stay away from sexual immorality, live in holiness, love one another as brothers and sisters, and work with their own hands to live respectably toward those outside. 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12
1 Thessaloniciens 4,1-12
1Finally, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus: as you received from us instruction in how you ought to live and please God — and this is how you are living — do so all the more.
2For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.
3This is the will of God: your sanctification. Keep away from sexual immorality.
4Each of you must know how to take a wife for himself in holiness and honor,* [*Or: how to control his own body in holiness and honor.]
5not in the passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God.
6No one should overstep or take advantage of his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, as we told you before and solemnly warned you.
7For God did not call us to impurity, but to live in holiness.
8Therefore whoever rejects this does not reject a human being but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.
9About brotherly love there is no need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another,
10and indeed you are doing this for all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to do so all the more,
11and to make it your ambition to live quietly, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, just as we instructed you,
12so that you may conduct yourselves properly toward outsiders and be dependent on no one.
