Sending of the Twelve Apostles
Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority over unclean spirits and to heal diseases. He named the twelve apostles and sent them out to the lost sheep of the house of Israel with the message that the kingdom of heaven has come near. He instructed them not to take gold, silver, or extra supplies for their journey, and told them how to greet the houses they entered. Jesus warned them about persecution, saying they would be brought before councils, governors, and kings, and that they would be hated for his name's sake. He urged them not to fear people but to trust in the Father's care – he who counts every hair on their head and knows when a sparrow falls. Finally, he said that whoever takes up their cross and follows him, and loses their life for his sake, will find it.
Matthieu 10,1-42
1He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to drive them out and to heal every disease and every sickness.
Καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος τοὺς δώδεκα μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ἐξουσίαν πνευμάτων ἀκαθάρτων ὥστε ἐκβάλλειν αὐτὰ καὶ θεραπεύειν πᾶσαν νόσον καὶ πᾶσαν μαλακίαν.
2These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;
τῶν δὲ δώδεκα ἀποστόλων τὰ ὀνόματά ἐστιν ταῦτα· πρῶτος Σίμων ὁ λεγόμενος Πέτρος καὶ Ἀνδρέας ὁ ἀδελφὸς ⸀αὐτοῦ, Ἰάκωβος ὁ τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου καὶ Ἰωάννης ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ,
3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;
Φίλιππος καὶ Βαρθολομαῖος, Θωμᾶς καὶ Μαθθαῖος ὁ τελώνης, Ἰάκωβος ὁ τοῦ Ἁλφαίου καὶ ⸀Θαδδαῖος,
4Simon the Cananaean,[^1] and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
[^1]: An Aramaic term meaning "the zealous one"; elsewhere rendered "Simon the Zealot."
Σίμων ὁ ⸀Καναναῖος καὶ Ἰούδας ⸀ὁ Ἰσκαριώτης ὁ καὶ παραδοὺς αὐτόν.
5These twelve Jesus sent out with these instructions: "Do not go among the Gentiles, and do not enter any town of the Samaritans.
Τούτους τοὺς δώδεκα ἀπέστειλεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς παραγγείλας αὐτοῖς λέγων· Εἰς ὁδὸν ἐθνῶν μὴ ἀπέλθητε καὶ εἰς πόλιν Σαμαριτῶν μὴ εἰσέλθητε·
6Go instead to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
πορεύεσθε δὲ μᾶλλον πρὸς τὰ πρόβατα τὰ ἀπολωλότα οἴκου Ἰσραήλ.
7As you go, proclaim this message: 'The kingdom of heaven has come near.'
πορευόμενοι δὲ κηρύσσετε λέγοντες ὅτι Ἤγγικεν ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν.
8Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.
ἀσθενοῦντας θεραπεύετε, ⸂νεκροὺς ἐγείρετε⸃, λεπροὺς καθαρίζετε, δαιμόνια ἐκβάλλετε· δωρεὰν ἐλάβετε, δωρεὰν δότε.
9Take no gold or silver or copper in your belts,
μὴ κτήσησθε χρυσὸν μηδὲ ἄργυρον μηδὲ χαλκὸν εἰς τὰς ζώνας ὑμῶν,
10no bag for the journey, no second tunic, no sandals, no staff; for the worker deserves his food.
μὴ πήραν εἰς ὁδὸν μηδὲ δύο χιτῶνας μηδὲ ὑποδήματα μηδὲ ⸀ῥάβδον· ἄξιος γὰρ ὁ ἐργάτης τῆς τροφῆς ⸀αὐτοῦ.
11Whatever town or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave.
εἰς ἣν δʼ ἂν πόλιν ἢ κώμην εἰσέλθητε, ἐξετάσατε τίς ἐν αὐτῇ ἄξιός ἐστιν· κἀκεῖ μείνατε ἕως ἂν ἐξέλθητε.
12As you enter the house, give it your greeting of peace.
εἰσερχόμενοι δὲ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν ἀσπάσασθε αὐτήν·
13If the house is worthy, let your peace rest on it; if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.
καὶ ἐὰν μὲν ᾖ ἡ οἰκία ἀξία, ἐλθάτω ἡ εἰρήνη ὑμῶν ἐπʼ αὐτήν· ἐὰν δὲ μὴ ᾖ ἀξία, ἡ εἰρήνη ὑμῶν ⸀πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐπιστραφήτω.
14And if anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that house or town and shake the dust off your feet.
καὶ ὃς ⸀ἂν μὴ δέξηται ὑμᾶς μηδὲ ἀκούσῃ τοὺς λόγους ὑμῶν, ἐξερχόμενοι ⸀ἔξω τῆς οἰκίας ἢ τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης ἐκτινάξατε τὸν κονιορτὸν τῶν ποδῶν ὑμῶν.
15Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.
ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ἀνεκτότερον ἔσται γῇ Σοδόμων καὶ Γομόρρων ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κρίσεως ἢ τῇ πόλει ἐκείνῃ.
16Look, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as serpents and as innocent as doves.
Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἀποστέλλω ὑμᾶς ὡς πρόβατα ἐν μέσῳ λύκων· γίνεσθε οὖν φρόνιμοι ὡς οἱ ὄφεις καὶ ἀκέραιοι ὡς αἱ περιστεραί.
17Be on your guard against people, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues.
προσέχετε δὲ ἀπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων· παραδώσουσιν γὰρ ὑμᾶς εἰς συνέδρια, καὶ ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς αὐτῶν μαστιγώσουσιν ὑμᾶς·
18You will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.
καὶ ἐπὶ ἡγεμόνας δὲ καὶ βασιλεῖς ἀχθήσεσθε ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ εἰς μαρτύριον αὐτοῖς καὶ τοῖς ἔθνεσιν.
19But when they hand you over, do not worry about how or what you are to say. What you are to say will be given to you at that hour,
ὅταν δὲ ⸀παραδῶσιν ὑμᾶς, μὴ μεριμνήσητε πῶς ἢ τί λαλήσητε· δοθήσεται γὰρ ὑμῖν ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ τί ⸀λαλήσητε·
20for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
οὐ γὰρ ὑμεῖς ἐστε οἱ λαλοῦντες ἀλλὰ τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ πατρὸς ὑμῶν τὸ λαλοῦν ἐν ὑμῖν.
21Brother will hand over brother to death, and a father his child; children will rise against their parents and have them put to death.
παραδώσει δὲ ἀδελφὸς ἀδελφὸν εἰς θάνατον καὶ πατὴρ τέκνον, καὶ ἐπαναστήσονται τέκνα ἐπὶ γονεῖς καὶ θανατώσουσιν αὐτούς.
22You will be hated by everyone because of my name, but the one who endures to the end will be saved.
καὶ ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου· ὁ δὲ ὑπομείνας εἰς τέλος οὗτος σωθήσεται.
23When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next. Truly I tell you, you will not have finished going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
ὅταν δὲ διώκωσιν ὑμᾶς ἐν τῇ πόλει ταύτῃ, φεύγετε εἰς τὴν ⸀ἑτέραν· ἀμὴν γὰρ λέγω ὑμῖν, οὐ μὴ τελέσητε τὰς πόλεις ⸀τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ ἕως ⸀ἂν ἔλθῃ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου.
24A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.
Οὐκ ἔστιν μαθητὴς ὑπὲρ τὸν διδάσκαλον οὐδὲ δοῦλος ὑπὲρ τὸν κύριον αὐτοῦ.
25It is enough for the disciple to become like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!
ἀρκετὸν τῷ μαθητῇ ἵνα γένηται ὡς ὁ διδάσκαλος αὐτοῦ, καὶ ὁ δοῦλος ὡς ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ. εἰ τὸν οἰκοδεσπότην Βεελζεβοὺλ ⸀ἐπεκάλεσαν, πόσῳ μᾶλλον τοὺς οἰκιακοὺς αὐτοῦ.
26So do not be afraid of them. There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, and nothing hidden that will not be made known.
Μὴ οὖν φοβηθῆτε αὐτούς· οὐδὲν γάρ ἐστιν κεκαλυμμένον ὃ οὐκ ἀποκαλυφθήσεται, καὶ κρυπτὸν ὃ οὐ γνωσθήσεται.
27What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim from the rooftops.
ὃ λέγω ὑμῖν ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ, εἴπατε ἐν τῷ φωτί· καὶ ὃ εἰς τὸ οὖς ἀκούετε, κηρύξατε ἐπὶ τῶν δωμάτων.
28Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, fear the one who can destroy both soul and body in hell.[^1]
[^1]: Greek *Gehenna*, a valley outside Jerusalem used as an image of final judgment.
καὶ μὴ ⸀φοβεῖσθε ἀπὸ τῶν ἀποκτεννόντων τὸ σῶμα τὴν δὲ ψυχὴν μὴ δυναμένων ἀποκτεῖναι· ⸁φοβεῖσθε δὲ μᾶλλον τὸν δυνάμενον ⸀καὶ ψυχὴν ⸁καὶ σῶμα ἀπολέσαι ἐν γεέννῃ.
29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.
οὐχὶ δύο στρουθία ἀσσαρίου πωλεῖται; καὶ ἓν ἐξ αὐτῶν οὐ πεσεῖται ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἄνευ τοῦ πατρὸς ὑμῶν.
30And even the hairs of your head are all numbered.
ὑμῶν δὲ καὶ αἱ τρίχες τῆς κεφαλῆς πᾶσαι ἠριθμημέναι εἰσίν.
31So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
μὴ οὖν ⸀φοβεῖσθε· πολλῶν στρουθίων διαφέρετε ὑμεῖς.
32Therefore everyone who acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.
Πᾶς οὖν ὅστις ὁμολογήσει ἐν ἐμοὶ ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων, ὁμολογήσω κἀγὼ ἐν αὐτῷ ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ πατρός μου τοῦ ⸀ἐν οὐρανοῖς·
33But whoever denies me before others, I will also deny him before my Father in heaven.
ὅστις ⸂δʼ ἂν⸃ ἀρνήσηταί με ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων, ἀρνήσομαι ⸂κἀγὼ αὐτὸν⸃ ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ πατρός μου τοῦ ⸀ἐν οὐρανοῖς.
34Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
Μὴ νομίσητε ὅτι ἦλθον βαλεῖν εἰρήνην ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν· οὐκ ἦλθον βαλεῖν εἰρήνην ἀλλὰ μάχαιραν.
35For I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—
ἦλθον γὰρ διχάσαι ἄνθρωπον κατὰ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ θυγατέρα κατὰ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτῆς καὶ νύμφην κατὰ τῆς πενθερᾶς αὐτῆς,
36a person's enemies will be the members of his own household.
καὶ ἐχθροὶ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οἱ οἰκιακοὶ αὐτοῦ.
37Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
ὁ φιλῶν πατέρα ἢ μητέρα ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος· καὶ ὁ φιλῶν υἱὸν ἢ θυγατέρα ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος·
38And whoever does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
καὶ ὃς οὐ λαμβάνει τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀκολουθεῖ ὀπίσω μου, οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος.
39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
ὁ εὑρὼν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἀπολέσει αὐτήν, καὶ ὁ ἀπολέσας τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ εὑρήσει αὐτήν.
40Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.
Ὁ δεχόμενος ὑμᾶς ἐμὲ δέχεται, καὶ ὁ ἐμὲ δεχόμενος δέχεται τὸν ἀποστείλαντά με.
41Whoever welcomes a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person because he is righteous will receive a righteous person's reward.
ὁ δεχόμενος προφήτην εἰς ὄνομα προφήτου μισθὸν προφήτου λήμψεται, καὶ ὁ δεχόμενος δίκαιον εἰς ὄνομα δικαίου μισθὸν δικαίου λήμψεται.
42And whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple—truly I tell you, he will certainly not lose his reward.
καὶ ὃς ⸀ἂν ποτίσῃ ἕνα τῶν μικρῶν τούτων ποτήριον ψυχροῦ μόνον εἰς ὄνομα μαθητοῦ, ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, οὐ μὴ ἀπολέσῃ τὸν μισθὸν αὐτοῦ.
