The Question about Fasting
Some ask Jesus why the disciples of John and the Pharisees fast, while his own disciples do not. Jesus answers with the image of the bridegroom: wedding guests cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them, but days will come when he is taken from them. He also uses the parables about a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment and new wine in old wineskins to show that the new requires new forms.
Marc 2,18-22
18Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked him, "Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?"
Καὶ ἦσαν οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου καὶ οἱ ⸀Φαρισαῖοι νηστεύοντες. καὶ ἔρχονται καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ· Διὰ τί οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου καὶ οἱ ⸀μαθηταὶ τῶν Φαρισαίων νηστεύουσιν, οἱ δὲ σοὶ μαθηταὶ οὐ νηστεύουσιν;
19Jesus answered, "Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Μὴ δύνανται οἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ νυμφῶνος ἐν ᾧ ὁ νυμφίος μετʼ αὐτῶν ἐστιν νηστεύειν; ὅσον χρόνον ⸂ἔχουσιν τὸν νυμφίον μετʼ αὐτῶν⸃ οὐ δύνανται νηστεύειν·
20But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and on that day they will fast.
ἐλεύσονται δὲ ἡμέραι ὅταν ἀπαρθῇ ἀπʼ αὐτῶν ὁ νυμφίος, καὶ τότε νηστεύσουσιν ἐν ⸂ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ⸃.
21No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch pulls away from it—new from old—and the tear becomes worse.
⸀Οὐδεὶς ἐπίβλημα ῥάκους ἀγνάφου ἐπιράπτει ἐπὶ ⸂ἱμάτιον παλαιόν⸃· εἰ δὲ μή, αἴρει τὸ πλήρωμα ⸀ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ τὸ καινὸν τοῦ παλαιοῦ, καὶ χεῖρον σχίσμα γίνεται.
22And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins are ruined. No, new wine goes into fresh wineskins."
καὶ οὐδεὶς βάλλει οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς παλαιούς· εἰ δὲ μή, ⸂ῥήξει ὁ οἶνος⸃ τοὺς ἀσκούς, καὶ ὁ οἶνος ⸂ἀπόλλυται καὶ οἱ ἀσκοί⸃. ἀλλὰ οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς ⸀καινούς.
