The Indictment of the Blind and Deaf People
The Lord asks his people a sharp question: Who is blind like my servant, and deaf like the messenger I send? The people have seen much but do not take it to heart; their ears are open, yet they do not hear. Although the Lord made the law great and glorious for the sake of his righteousness, the people are plundered and robbed, trapped in snares and hidden in prisons. The prophet explains that it was the Lord himself who handed Jacob over to be plundered and Israel to robbers, because they sinned against him and would not walk in his ways. Therefore he poured out his burning wrath on them, but they did not understand it or take it to heart Isaiah 42:18-25.
Ésaïe 42,18-25
18Listen, you deaf; look, you blind, and see!
הַחֵרְשִׁ֖ים שְׁמָ֑עוּ וְהַעִוְרִ֖ים הַבִּ֥יטוּ לִרְאֽוֹת׃
19Who is blind but my servant, and deaf like the messenger I send? Who is blind like the one committed to me, blind like the servant of the LORD?
מִ֤י עִוֵּר֙ כִּ֣י אִם־עַבְדִּ֔י וְחֵרֵ֖שׁ כְּמַלְאָכִ֣י אֶשְׁלָ֑ח מִ֤י עִוֵּר֙ כִּמְשֻׁלָּ֔ם וְעִוֵּ֖ר כְּעֶ֥בֶד יְהוָֽה׃
20You have seen much, but you pay no attention; your ears are open, but you hear nothing.
*ראית **רָא֥וֹת רַבּ֖וֹת וְלֹ֣א תִשְׁמֹ֑ר פָּק֥וֹחַ אָזְנַ֖יִם וְלֹ֥א יִשְׁמָֽע׃
21It pleased the LORD, for the sake of his righteousness, to make his law great and glorious.
יְהוָ֥ה חָפֵ֖ץ לְמַ֣עַן צִדְק֑וֹ יַגְדִּ֥יל תּוֹרָ֖ה וְיַאְדִּֽיר׃
22But this is a people plundered and stripped bare, all of them trapped in pits, hidden away in prisons. They have become plunder with no one to rescue them, spoil with no one to say, "Give it back!"
וְהוּא֮ עַם־בָּז֣וּז וְשָׁסוּי֒ הָפֵ֤חַ בַּֽחוּרִים֙ כֻּלָּ֔ם וּבְבָתֵּ֥י כְלָאִ֖ים הָחְבָּ֑אוּ הָי֤וּ לָבַז֙ וְאֵ֣ין מַצִּ֔יל מְשִׁסָּ֖ה וְאֵין־אֹמֵ֥ר הָשַֽׁב׃
23Which of you will listen to this, will pay attention and heed it in time to come?
מִ֥י בָכֶ֖ם יַאֲזִ֣ין זֹ֑את יַקְשִׁ֥ב וְיִשְׁמַ֖ע לְאָחֽוֹר׃
24Who handed Jacob over to be plundered, and Israel to the looters? Was it not the LORD, against whom we have sinned? For they would not walk in his ways or obey his law.
מִֽי־נָתַ֨ן *למשוסה **לִמְשִׁסָּ֧ה יַעֲקֹ֛ב וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל לְבֹזְזִ֖ים הֲל֣וֹא יְהוָ֑ה ז֚וּ חָטָ֣אנוּ ל֔וֹ וְלֹֽא־אָב֤וּ בִדְרָכָיו֙ הָל֔וֹךְ וְלֹ֥א שָׁמְע֖וּ בְּתוֹרָתֽוֹ׃
25So he poured out on them his burning anger and the violence of war. It engulfed them in flames, yet they did not understand; it consumed them, yet they took none of it to heart.
וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֤ךְ עָלָיו֙ חֵמָ֣ה אַפּ֔וֹ וֶעֱז֖וּז מִלְחָמָ֑ה וַתְּלַהֲטֵ֤הוּ מִסָּבִיב֙ וְלֹ֣א יָדָ֔ע וַתִּבְעַר־בּ֖וֹ וְלֹא־יָשִׂ֥ים עַל־לֵֽב׃ פ
