The King of Babylon at the Crossroads
The prophet Ezekiel is commissioned to draw two paths that the sword of the king of Babylon may take, with a signpost where the roads split—one toward Rabbah in the land of Ammon and one toward Judah and Jerusalem. The king of Babylon stands at the crossroads seeking an omen by shaking arrows, consulting household gods, and examining the liver. The lot falls on Jerusalem, where he will set up siege ramps and lay siege to the city. The people see it as a false omen, but the Lord reminds them of their guilt, and judgment also strikes the ungodly prince of Israel, who must remove his turban and crown.
Ézéchiel 21,23-32
23The word of the LORD came to me:
וַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יְהוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃
24Son of man, mark out two roads for the sword of the king of Babylon to travel—both of them leading out from the same land. Set up a signpost where the road forks toward the city.
וְאַתָּ֨ה בֶן־אָדָ֜ם שִׂים־לְךָ֣ ׀ שְׁנַ֣יִם דְּרָכִ֗ים לָבוֹא֙ חֶ֣רֶב מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶ֔ל מֵאֶ֥רֶץ אֶחָ֖ד יֵצְא֣וּ שְׁנֵיהֶ֑ם וְיָ֣ד בָּרֵ֔א בְּרֹ֥אשׁ דֶּֽרֶךְ־עִ֖יר בָּרֵֽא׃
25Mark out one road for the sword to come against Rabbah of the Ammonites, and another against Judah, against fortified Jerusalem.
דֶּ֣רֶךְ תָּשִׂ֔ים לָב֣וֹא חֶ֔רֶב אֵ֖ת רַבַּ֣ת בְּנֵֽי־עַמּ֑וֹן וְאֶת־יְהוּדָ֥ה בִירוּשָׁלַ֖͏ִם בְּצוּרָֽה׃
26For the king of Babylon will stand at the fork of the road, where the two ways part, to seek an omen: he will shake the arrows, consult the household idols, and examine the liver.
כִּֽי־עָמַ֨ד מֶלֶךְ־בָּבֶ֜ל אֶל־אֵ֣ם הַדֶּ֗רֶךְ בְּרֹ֛אשׁ שְׁנֵ֥י הַדְּרָכִ֖ים לִקְסָם־קָ֑סֶם קִלְקַ֤ל בַּֽחִצִּים֙ שָׁאַ֣ל בַּתְּרָפִ֔ים רָאָ֖ה בַּכָּבֵֽד׃
27Into his right hand comes the omen—Jerusalem: to set up battering rams, to open the mouth for the slaughter, to raise the voice with the battle shout, to bring the rams against her gates, to throw up siege ramps and build siege walls.
בִּֽימִינ֞וֹ הָיָ֣ה ׀ הַקֶּ֣סֶם יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם לָשׂ֤וּם כָּרִים֙ לִפְתֹּ֤חַ פֶּה֙ בְּרֶ֔צַח לְהָרִ֥ים ק֖וֹל בִּתְרוּעָ֑ה לָשׂ֤וּם כָּרִים֙ עַל־שְׁעָרִ֔ים לִשְׁפֹּ֥ךְ סֹלְלָ֖ה לִבְנ֥וֹת דָּיֵֽק׃
28To them it will seem a false omen, for they have sworn solemn oaths—but he calls their guilt to mind, so that they will be captured.
וְהָיָ֨ה לָהֶ֤ם *כקסום־**כִּקְסָם־שָׁוְא֙ בְּעֵ֣ינֵיהֶ֔ם שְׁבֻעֵ֥י שְׁבֻע֖וֹת לָהֶ֑ם וְהֽוּא־מַזְכִּ֥יר עָוֺ֖ן לְהִתָּפֵֽשׂ׃ פ
29Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you have brought your guilt to mind, so that your rebellions are laid bare and your sins are exposed in everything you do—because you have brought yourselves to remembrance, you will be taken captive by force.
לָכֵ֗ן כֹּֽה־אָמַר֮ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֒ יַ֗עַן הַזְכַּרְכֶם֙ עֲוֺ֣נְכֶ֔ם בְּהִגָּל֣וֹת פִּשְׁעֵיכֶ֗ם לְהֵֽרָאוֹת֙ חַטֹּ֣אותֵיכֶ֔ם בְּכֹ֖ל עֲלִילֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם יַ֚עַן הִזָּ֣כֶרְכֶ֔ם בַּכַּ֖ף תִּתָּפֵֽשׂוּ׃ פ
30And you, profane and wicked prince of Israel, whose day has come, the time of your final punishment—
וְאַתָּה֙ חָלָ֣ל רָשָׁ֔ע נְשִׂ֖יא יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֣א יוֹמ֔וֹ בְּעֵ֖ת עֲוֺ֥ן קֵֽץ׃ ס
31thus says the Lord GOD: Remove the turban, take off the crown! Nothing will remain as it was: the lowly will be lifted up, and the exalted brought low.
כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה הָסִיר֙ הַמִּצְנֶ֔פֶת וְהָרִ֖ים הָֽעֲטָרָ֑ה זֹ֣את לֹא־זֹ֔את הַשָּׁפָ֣לָה הַגְבֵּ֔הַ וְהַגָּבֹ֖הַ הַשְׁפִּֽיל׃
32A ruin, a ruin, a ruin I will make it! Nor will this stand until he comes to whom the judgment belongs; to him I will give it.
עַוָּ֥ה עַוָּ֖ה עַוָּ֣ה אֲשִׂימֶ֑נָּה גַּם־זֹאת֙ לֹ֣א הָיָ֔ה עַד־בֹּ֛א אֲשֶׁר־ל֥וֹ הַמִּשְׁפָּ֖ט וּנְתַתִּֽיו׃ פ
