Prophet with a message of judgment against the house of Baasha

Aussi appelé : Agee

Le royaume diviséProphetc. 900s BC

Ahuja, son of the prophet Hanani, served as a prophet during the time of the divided kingdom and delivered God's message of judgment against Baasha, king of the northern kingdom of Israel. The prophecy declared that Baasha's dynastic house would be wiped out just like Jeroboam's house, because Baasha persistently did what was evil in the Lord's sight, led Israel into idolatry, and was guilty of shedding blood against Jeroboam's family—even though he had acted as God's instrument of punishment. The message of judgment came to pass when Zimri, one of Elah's officers, killed Baasha's son Elah and destroyed his entire lineage. Ahijah's prophetic work was also recorded in writing, and the Books of Chronicles mention his chronicle as a historical source that was included in the Book of the Kings of Israel.

Prophecy against Baasha

The word of the Lord came to the prophet Age, son of Hanani, with a message of judgment against Baasha, king of Israel. Age proclaimed that because Baasha had done what was evil in the sight of the Lord and followed the sinful ways of Jeroboam, his house would be completely wiped out. Dogs would eat those of his family who died in the city, and birds under heaven would eat those who died in the open country.

1The word of the LORD came to Jehu son of Hanani against Baasha:
2"I lifted you out of the dust and made you ruler over my people Israel, but you walked in the way of Jeroboam and led my people Israel into sin, provoking me to anger with their sins.
3So now I will sweep away Baasha and his house, and I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam son of Nebat.
4Anyone belonging to Baasha who dies in the city the dogs will eat, and anyone of his who dies in the open country the birds of the sky will eat."

Further accusation against Baasha

Through the prophet Age came a further word of judgment against Baasha: beyond having sinned by following the ways of Jeroboam and provoking the Lord to anger through idolatry, he was also held responsible for the bloodshed against the house of Jeroboam—even though in this he had served as God's instrument to carry out the earlier judgment on Jeroboam.

7Moreover, through the prophet Jehu son of Hanani the word of the LORD had come against Baasha and his house, both because of all the evil he had done in the eyes of the LORD, provoking him to anger by the work of his hands and becoming like the house of Jeroboam, and because he had struck down Jeroboam's house.

Fulfillment of Age's prophecy

Age's prophecy was fulfilled when Zimri, one of King Elah's officers, conspired against and killed Elah, Baasha's son, while he was getting drunk in Tirzah. Zimri then wiped out the entire house of Baasha without sparing a single male relative, in accordance with the word that the Lord had spoken through the prophet Age.

10Zimri came in, struck him down, and killed him, in the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah, and he became king in his place.
11As soon as he began to reign and was seated on his throne, he struck down the whole house of Baasha. He did not leave him a single male, neither kinsman nor friend.
12So Zimri destroyed the entire house of Baasha, according to the word of the LORD spoken against Baasha through the prophet Jehu—
13because of all the sins of Baasha and the sins of his son Elah, which they committed and led Israel to commit, provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger with their worthless idols.

Ages chronicle as a historical source

Age's prophetic work was recorded in writing. In 2 Chronicles, 'the chronicle of Jehu son of Hanani' is mentioned as a historical source concerning the deeds of King Jehoshaphat, and it is noted that this chronicle was included in the Book of the Kings of Israel.

34The rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, from beginning to end, are written in the annals of Jehu son of Hanani, which are recorded in the book of the kings of Israel.
