In the genealogy of the tribe of Judah in 1 Chronicles, Ardon appears as one of three sons that Caleb, son of Hezron, had with Azubah—the other two being Jesher and Shobab. This Caleb must be distinguished from the more famous Caleb, son of Jephunneh, who spied out Canaan; Caleb, son of Hezron, belongs to an earlier generation, only three generations removed from the patriarch Judah himself. Ardon appears exclusively in this genealogical context and is attributed no actions or further descendants in the biblical texts. His presence in the family tree nevertheless underscores Chronicles' desire to document all branches of the tribe of Judah—the tribe that through Hezron's son Ram carried forward the Davidic royal line and the messianic promise.
After Asuba died, Caleb took Ephrath as his wife, and she bore him Hur. Ardon thus belongs to the older branch of Caleb's descendants through Asuba, while Hur represents the younger branch through Ephrath.
