Baasha was the third king of the northern kingdom of Israel. He came to power by killing King Nadab and wiping out the entire house of Jeroboam. Despite prophetic warning, he continued in the sins of Jeroboam and led Israel away from the Lord.

Conspiracy Against Nadab

Baasha conspired against King Nadab and killed him at Gibbethon while Israel was besieging the Philistine city. This happened in the second year of Asa king of Judah's reign.

27Baasha son of Ahijah, of the house of Issachar, conspired against him and struck him down at Gibbethon, a Philistine town, while Nadab and all Israel were besieging it.

The Destruction of Jeroboam's House

After seizing power, Baasha wiped out the entire family of Jeroboam, leaving no survivors. This fulfilled the word of the prophet Ahijah against Jeroboam.

29As soon as he was king, he struck down the entire house of Jeroboam. He left Jeroboam no one that breathed, until he had destroyed them all, according to the word the LORD had spoken through his servant Ahijah the Shilonite—

Twenty-four Years of Reign

Baasha reigned over Israel for twenty-four years from Tirzah. He continued in the sins of Jeroboam and led Israel into sin against the Lord.

33In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha son of Ahijah became king over all Israel in Tirzah, and he reigned twenty-four years.

The Judgment of the Prophet Jehu

The Lord sent the prophet Jehu son of Hanani with a message of judgment against Baasha. Because he persisted in the sins of Jeroboam, his family was to be wiped out in the same way.

וַיְהִ֤י דְבַר־יְהוָה֙ אֶל־יֵה֣וּא בֶן־חֲנָ֔נִי עַל־בַּעְשָׁ֖א לֵאמֹֽר׃ ‬

War Against Judah and the Fortification of Ramah

Baasha waged war against Asa king of Judah and fortified Ramah to block all traffic to and from Judah. Asa responded by forming an alliance with Syria, which then attacked Israel.

The Death of Baasha

Baasha died and was buried in Tirzah. His son Elah succeeded him as king, but his dynasty lasted only two years before it was overthrown.
