The Man Born Blind
Witness to Christ's Divine Power
The man born blind was a beggar in Jerusalem whom Jesus healed on the Sabbath by applying clay to his eyes. His courageous testimony before the Pharisees and his confession of faith in Jesus as the Son of God make him a powerful example of spiritual awakening.

Born Blind from Birth
The man had been blind all his life, and the disciples asked Jesus whether it was his sin or that of his parents that caused the blindness.
1As Jesus was passing by, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.
Καὶ παράγων εἶδεν ἄνθρωπον τυφλὸν ἐκ γενετῆς.
2His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"
καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ λέγοντες· Ῥαββί, τίς ἥμαρτεν, οὗτος ἢ οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ, ἵνα τυφλὸς γεννηθῇ;
3Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned. This happened so that the works of God might be revealed in him.
ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς· Οὔτε οὗτος ἥμαρτεν οὔτε οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ, ἀλλʼ ἵνα φανερωθῇ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ.
Jesus Heals Him
Jesus spat on the ground, made clay, applied it to the man's eyes, and told him to wash in the Pool of Siloam. When he did so, he received his sight.
6When he had said this, he spat on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and spread it on the man's eyes.
ταῦτα εἰπὼν ἔπτυσεν χαμαὶ καὶ ἐποίησεν πηλὸν ἐκ τοῦ πτύσματος, καὶ ⸀ἐπέχρισεν ⸀αὐτοῦ τὸν πηλὸν ἐπὶ τοὺς ⸀ὀφθαλμούς,
7Then he told him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means "Sent"). So the man went and washed, and came back seeing.
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ὕπαγε νίψαι εἰς τὴν κολυμβήθραν τοῦ Σιλωάμ (ὃ ἑρμηνεύεται Ἀπεσταλμένος). ἀπῆλθεν οὖν καὶ ἐνίψατο, καὶ ἦλθεν βλέπων.
Testifying to Neighbors
After the healing, neighbors barely recognized him, and he had to explain what had happened to him.
8His neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar said, "Isn't this the man who used to sit and beg?"
οἱ οὖν γείτονες καὶ οἱ θεωροῦντες αὐτὸν τὸ πρότερον ὅτι ⸀προσαίτης ἦν ἔλεγον· Οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ καθήμενος καὶ προσαιτῶν;
9Some said, "It's him." Others said, "No, but he looks like him." He himself kept saying, "I am the one."
ἄλλοι ἔλεγον ὅτι Οὗτός ἐστιν· ἄλλοι ⸂ἔλεγον· Οὐχί, ἀλλὰ⸃ ὅμοιος αὐτῷ ἐστιν. ἐκεῖνος ἔλεγεν ὅτι Ἐγώ εἰμι.
10So they asked him, "How were your eyes opened?"
ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ· ⸀Πῶς ἠνεῴχθησάν σου οἱ ὀφθαλμοί;
11He answered, "The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and told me, 'Go to Siloam and wash.' So I went and washed, and I could see."
ἀπεκρίθη ⸀ἐκεῖνος· ⸂Ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ⸃ λεγόμενος Ἰησοῦς πηλὸν ἐποίησεν καὶ ἐπέχρισέν μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς καὶ εἶπέν μοι ⸀ὅτι Ὕπαγε εἰς ⸀τὸν Σιλωὰμ καὶ νίψαι· ἀπελθὼν ⸀οὖν καὶ νιψάμενος ἀνέβλεψα.
12"Where is he?" they asked him. "I don't know," he said.
⸂καὶ εἶπαν⸃ αὐτῷ· Ποῦ ἐστιν ἐκεῖνος; λέγει· Οὐκ οἶδα.
Interrogated by the Pharisees
The Pharisees questioned him repeatedly about the healing that took place on the Sabbath, and he boldly testified that Jesus must be from God.
13They brought the man who had been blind to the Pharisees.
Ἄγουσιν αὐτὸν πρὸς τοὺς Φαρισαίους τόν ποτε τυφλόν.
14Now it was on a Sabbath day that Jesus had made the mud and opened his eyes.
ἦν δὲ σάββατον ⸂ἐν ᾗ ἡμέρᾳ⸃ τὸν πηλὸν ἐποίησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἀνέῳξεν αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς.
15So the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He told them, "He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and now I see."
πάλιν οὖν ἠρώτων αὐτὸν καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι πῶς ἀνέβλεψεν. ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Πηλὸν ἐπέθηκέν μου ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς, καὶ ἐνιψάμην, καὶ βλέπω.
16Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, because he does not keep the Sabbath." But others said, "How can a sinner perform such signs?" So they were divided.
ἔλεγον οὖν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων τινές· ⸂Οὐκ ἔστιν οὗτος παρὰ θεοῦ ὁ ἄνθρωπος⸃, ὅτι τὸ σάββατον οὐ τηρεῖ. ⸀ἄλλοι ἔλεγον· Πῶς δύναται ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλὸς τοιαῦτα σημεῖα ποιεῖν; καὶ σχίσμα ἦν ἐν αὐτοῖς.
17They turned again to the blind man: "What do you say about him, since it was your eyes he opened?" He said, "He is a prophet."
λέγουσιν ⸀οὖν τῷ τυφλῷ πάλιν· ⸂Τί σὺ⸃ λέγεις περὶ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἠνέῳξέν σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς; ὁ δὲ εἶπεν ὅτι Προφήτης ἐστίν.
24So a second time they called the man who had been blind, and they said to him, "Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner."
Ἐφώνησαν οὖν ⸂τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐκ δευτέρου⸃ ὃς ἦν τυφλὸς καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ· Δὸς δόξαν τῷ θεῷ· ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι ⸂οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος⸃ ἁμαρτωλός ἐστιν.
25He answered, "Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know: I was blind, and now I see."
ἀπεκρίθη οὖν ⸀ἐκεῖνος· Εἰ ἁμαρτωλός ἐστιν οὐκ οἶδα· ἓν οἶδα ὅτι τυφλὸς ὢν ἄρτι βλέπω.
30The man answered them, "Now that is remarkable! You do not know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.
ἀπεκρίθη ὁ ἄνθρωπος καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Ἐν ⸂τούτῳ γὰρ τὸ⸃ θαυμαστόν ἐστιν ὅτι ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε πόθεν ἐστίν, καὶ ἤνοιξέν μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς.
31We know that God does not listen to sinners, but he does listen to anyone who worships him and does his will.
⸀οἴδαμεν ὅτι ⸂ἁμαρτωλῶν ὁ θεὸς⸃ οὐκ ἀκούει, ἀλλʼ ἐάν τις θεοσεβὴς ᾖ καὶ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ ποιῇ τούτου ἀκούει.
32Never in all history has anyone heard of someone opening the eyes of a man born blind.
ἐκ τοῦ αἰῶνος οὐκ ἠκούσθη ὅτι ἠνέῳξέν τις ὀφθαλμοὺς τυφλοῦ γεγεννημένου·
33If this man were not from God, he could do nothing."
εἰ μὴ ἦν οὗτος παρὰ θεοῦ, οὐκ ἠδύνατο ποιεῖν οὐδέν.
Cast Out of the Synagogue
Because of his testimony about Jesus, he was cast out of the synagogue by the Jewish leaders.
34They answered him, "You were born steeped in sin, and you presume to teach us?" And they threw him out.
ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ· Ἐν ἁμαρτίαις σὺ ἐγεννήθης ὅλος, καὶ σὺ διδάσκεις ἡμᾶς; καὶ ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω.
35Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"
⸀Ἤκουσεν Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω, καὶ εὑρὼν αὐτὸν ⸀εἶπεν· Σὺ πιστεύεις εἰς τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ⸀ἀνθρώπου;
Confessing faith in Jesus
Jesus sought him out after he had been cast out, revealed himself as the Son of Man, and the man confessed his faith and worshiped him.
35Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"
⸀Ἤκουσεν Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω, καὶ εὑρὼν αὐτὸν ⸀εἶπεν· Σὺ πιστεύεις εἰς τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ⸀ἀνθρώπου;
36He answered, "And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?"
ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπεν· Καὶ τίς ἐστιν, κύριε, ἵνα πιστεύσω εἰς αὐτόν;
37Jesus said to him, "You have seen him; he is the one speaking with you."
⸀εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Καὶ ἑώρακας αὐτὸν καὶ ὁ λαλῶν μετὰ σοῦ ἐκεῖνός ἐστιν.
38"Lord, I believe," he said, and he worshiped him.
ὁ δὲ ἔφη· Πιστεύω, κύριε· καὶ προσεκύνησεν αὐτῷ.
