Overseer of the temple servants

Gishpa was one of those who had oversight over the temple servants (the Nethinim) in Jerusalem after the return from the Babylonian exile. He is mentioned in the book of Nehemiah as a leader among the temple servants who lived on the Ophel hill in Jerusalem. His role was to organize and supervise those who served at the temple.

Settlement of the temple servants on Ophel

The temple servants, under the leadership of Shiha and Gishpa, settled on the Ophel hill near the temple to carry out their service.

21The temple servants lived on Ophel, and Ziha and Gishpa were in charge of them.
וְהַנְּתִינִ֖ים יֹשְׁבִ֣ים בָּעֹ֑פֶל וְצִיחָ֥א וְגִשְׁפָּ֖א עַל־הַנְּתִינִֽים׃ פ ‬
22The overseer of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi son of Bani, son of Hashabiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Mica, one of the descendants of Asaph, the singers who served in the work of the house of God.
וּפְקִ֤יד הַלְוִיִּם֙ בִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם עֻזִּ֤י בֶן־בָּנִי֙ בֶּן־חֲשַׁבְיָ֔ה בֶּן־מַתַּנְיָ֖ה בֶּן־מִיכָ֑א מִבְּנֵ֤י אָסָף֙ הַמְשֹׁ֣רְרִ֔ים לְנֶ֖גֶד מְלֶ֥אכֶת בֵּית־הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ ‬

Rebuilding of Jerusalem's community

As part of Nehemiah's reorganization of Jerusalem, leaders were appointed for various groups, including the temple servants for whom Gishpa was responsible.

1The leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of every ten to live in Jerusalem, the holy city, while the other nine remained in the towns.
וַיֵּשְׁב֥וּ שָׂרֵֽי־הָעָ֖ם בִּירוּשָׁלָ֑͏ִם וּשְׁאָ֣ר הָ֠עָם הִפִּ֨ילוּ גוֹרָל֜וֹת לְהָבִ֣יא ׀ אֶחָ֣ד מִן־הָעֲשָׂרָ֗ה לָשֶׁ֙בֶת֙ בִּֽירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ עִ֣יר הַקֹּ֔דֶשׁ וְתֵ֥שַׁע הַיָּד֖וֹת בֶּעָרִֽים׃ ‬
2And the people blessed all the men who volunteered to live in Jerusalem.
וַֽיְבָרֲכ֖וּ הָעָ֑ם לְכֹל֙ הֽ͏ָאֲנָשִׁ֔ים הַמִּֽתְנַדְּבִ֔ים לָשֶׁ֖בֶת בִּירוּשָׁלָֽ͏ִם׃ פ ‬
3These are the heads of the province who settled in Jerusalem, while in the towns of Judah everyone lived on his own property in his own town — Israelites, priests, Levites, temple servants, and the descendants of Solomon's servants.
וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ רָאשֵׁ֣י הַמְּדִינָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָשְׁב֖וּ בִּירוּשָׁלָ֑͏ִם וּבְעָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֗ה יָֽשְׁב֞וּ אִ֤ישׁ בַּאֲחֻזָּתוֹ֙ בְּעָ֣רֵיהֶ֔ם יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל הַכֹּהֲנִים֙ וְהַלְוִיִּ֣ם וְהַנְּתִינִ֔ים וּבְנֵ֖י עַבְדֵ֥י שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ ‬

Registration of the inhabitants of Jerusalem

Gishpa is mentioned in connection with the great registration of those who lived in Jerusalem, which was part of Nehemiah's plan to repopulate the rebuilt city.

20The rest of Israel, with the priests and the Levites, lived in all the towns of Judah, each on his own inheritance.
וּשְׁאָ֨ר יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל הַכֹּהֲנִ֤ים הַלְוִיִּם֙ בְּכָל־עָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה אִ֖ישׁ בְּנַחֲלָתֽוֹ׃ ‬
21The temple servants lived on Ophel, and Ziha and Gishpa were in charge of them.
וְהַנְּתִינִ֖ים יֹשְׁבִ֣ים בָּעֹ֑פֶל וְצִיחָ֥א וְגִשְׁפָּ֖א עַל־הַנְּתִינִֽים׃ פ ‬
