Hammat's descendants, the Rechabites, became known for their faithfulness to the command of Jonadab son of Rekab not to drink wine and to live in tents, which was praised by the prophet Jeremiah.
7You are not to build houses, or sow seed, or plant vineyards, or own them. Instead, you are to live in tents all your days, so that you may live long in the land where you are sojourning.'

Because of the Rechabites' obedience to their ancestors' commands, God promised through Jeremiah that there would always be a man from the house of Rekab standing before the Lord.
