Jerusha (also spelled Jerusha) was the daughter of Zadok and wife of King Uzziah (Azariah) of Judah. She was the mother of King Jotham, who succeeded his father as king over Judah. She is known primarily through brief references in the Books of Kings and Chronicles.

Wife of King Uzziah

Jerusha was married to King Uzziah (Azariah), who reigned for 52 years over Judah, but who was struck with leprosy after acting wrongly in the temple.

1Then all the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah.
וַיִּקְח֞וּ כָּל־עַ֤ם יְהוּדָה֙ אֶת־עֻזִּיָּ֔הוּ וְה֕וּא בֶּן־שֵׁ֥שׁ עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה שָׁנָ֑ה וַיַּמְלִ֣יכוּ אֹת֔וֹ תַּ֖חַת אָבִ֥יו אֲמַצְיָֽהוּ׃ ‬
3Uzziah was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jecoliah, of Jerusalem.

21King Uzziah remained a leper until the day of his death. He lived in a separate house, a leper, cut off from the house of the LORD, while his son Jotham was in charge of the palace and governed the people of the land.
וַיְהִי֩ עֻזִּיָּ֨הוּ הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ מְצֹרָ֣ע ׀ עַד־י֣וֹם מוֹת֗וֹ וַיֵּ֜שֶׁב בֵּ֤ית *החפשות **הַֽחָפְשִׁית֙ מְצֹרָ֔ע כִּ֥י נִגְזַ֖ר מִבֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה וְיוֹתָ֤ם בְּנוֹ֙ עַל־בֵּ֣ית הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ שׁוֹפֵ֖ט אֶת־עַ֥ם הָאָֽרֶץ׃ ‬

Jotham takes over as regent

When her husband Uzziah became leprous, his son Jotham took charge of the king's house and judged the people in the land. The son of Jerusha proved to be a capable ruler.

5The LORD struck the king, and he had a defiling skin disease until the day of his death. He lived in a separate house, while Jotham the king's son was in charge of the palace and governed the people of the land.
וַיְנַגַּ֨ע יְהוָ֜ה אֶת־הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ וַיְהִ֤י מְצֹרָע֙ עַד־י֣וֹם מֹת֔וֹ וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב בְּבֵ֣ית הַחָפְשִׁ֑ית וְיוֹתָ֤ם בֶּן־הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ עַל־הַבַּ֔יִת שֹׁפֵ֖ט אֶת־עַ֥ם הָאָֽרֶץ׃ ‬
21King Uzziah remained a leper until the day of his death. He lived in a separate house, a leper, cut off from the house of the LORD, while his son Jotham was in charge of the palace and governed the people of the land.

23Uzziah rested with his fathers, and they buried him near his fathers in the burial field that belonged to the kings, for they said, "He was a leper." And his son Jotham became king in his place.
וַיִּשְׁכַּ֨ב עֻזִּיָּ֜הוּ עִם־אֲבֹתָ֗יו וַיִּקְבְּר֨וּ אֹת֤וֹ עִם־אֲבֹתָיו֙ בִּשְׂדֵ֤ה הַקְּבוּרָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לַמְּלָכִ֔ים כִּ֥י אָמְר֖וּ מְצוֹרָ֣ע ה֑וּא וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ יוֹתָ֥ם בְּנ֖וֹ תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ פ ‬

Jotham becomes king after Uzziah's death

After Uzziah's death, Jotham son of Jerusha was formally installed as king over Judah. He reigned for 16 years and did what was right in the Lord's eyes.

32In the second year of Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel, Jotham son of Uzziah became king of Judah.
בִּשְׁנַ֣ת שְׁתַּ֔יִם לְפֶ֥קַח בֶּן־רְמַלְיָ֖הוּ מֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל מָלַ֛ךְ יוֹתָ֥ם בֶּן־עֻזִיָּ֖הוּ מֶ֥לֶךְ יְהוּדָֽה׃ ‬
33He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jerusha daughter of Zadok.

34He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, following the example of his father Uzziah.
