The High Priest Who Condemned Jesus

Caiaphas (Joseph son of Caiaphas) was the high priest in Jerusalem from about 18 to 36 AD. He played a central role in the trial of Jesus and declared that it was better for one man to die than for the whole nation to perish. He was also involved in the persecution of the early church.

Caiaphas prophesied without knowing that Jesus would die for the people, and from that day on they made plans to kill Jesus.
47So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the council and said, "What are we doing? This man is performing many signs.
συνήγαγον οὖν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι συνέδριον, καὶ ἔλεγον· Τί ποιοῦμεν ὅτι οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος πολλὰ ⸂ποιεῖ σημεῖα⸃;
48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."
ἐὰν ἀφῶμεν αὐτὸν οὕτως, πάντες πιστεύσουσιν εἰς αὐτόν, καὶ ἐλεύσονται οἱ Ῥωμαῖοι καὶ ἀροῦσιν ἡμῶν καὶ τὸν τόπον καὶ τὸ ἔθνος.
49But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all.
εἷς δέ τις ἐξ αὐτῶν Καϊάφας, ἀρχιερεὺς ὢν τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἐκείνου, εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε οὐδέν,
50You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish."
οὐδὲ ⸀λογίζεσθε ὅτι συμφέρει ⸀ὑμῖν ἵνα εἷς ἄνθρωπος ἀποθάνῃ ὑπὲρ τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ μὴ ὅλον τὸ ἔθνος ἀπόληται.
51He did not say this on his own; but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation—
τοῦτο δὲ ἀφʼ ἑαυτοῦ οὐκ εἶπεν, ἀλλὰ ἀρχιερεὺς ὢν τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἐκείνου ἐπροφήτευσεν ὅτι ἔμελλεν Ἰησοῦς ἀποθνῄσκειν ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἔθνους,
52and not for the nation only, but to gather into one the scattered children of God.
καὶ οὐχ ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἔθνους μόνον, ἀλλʼ ἵνα καὶ τὰ τέκνα τοῦ θεοῦ τὰ διεσκορπισμένα συναγάγῃ εἰς ἕν.
53So from that day on they plotted to put him to death.
ἀπʼ ἐκείνης οὖν τῆς ἡμέρας ⸀ἐβουλεύσαντο ἵνα ἀποκτείνωσιν αὐτόν.
The Trial of Jesus Before the Jewish Council
Caiaphas led the trial of Jesus in his home and tore his clothes when Jesus confessed that he was the Messiah, the Son of God, declaring it blasphemy.
57Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered.
Οἱ δὲ κρατήσαντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπήγαγον πρὸς Καϊάφαν τὸν ἀρχιερέα, ὅπου οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι συνήχθησαν.
58Peter followed him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest. He went inside and sat down with the guards to see how it would end.
ὁ δὲ Πέτρος ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ἕως τῆς αὐλῆς τοῦ ἀρχιερέως, καὶ εἰσελθὼν ἔσω ἐκάθητο μετὰ τῶν ὑπηρετῶν ἰδεῖν τὸ τέλος.
59Meanwhile the chief priests and the whole council were looking for false testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death,
οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς ⸀καὶ τὸ συνέδριον ὅλον ἐζήτουν ψευδομαρτυρίαν κατὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ὅπως ⸂αὐτὸν θανατώσωσιν⸃,
60but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward
καὶ οὐχ εὗρον ⸂πολλῶν προσελθόντων ψευδομαρτύρων. ὕστερον δὲ προσελθόντες δύο⸃
61and said, "This man said, 'I can tear down the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.'"
εἶπαν· Οὗτος ἔφη· Δύναμαι καταλῦσαι τὸν ναὸν τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ διὰ τριῶν ἡμερῶν ⸀οἰκοδομῆσαι.
62The high priest stood up and said to him, "Have you no answer? What is this testimony they bring against you?"
καὶ ἀναστὰς ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Οὐδὲν ἀποκρίνῃ; τί οὗτοί σου καταμαρτυροῦσιν;
63But Jesus remained silent. So the high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God."
ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἐσιώπα. ⸀καὶ ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ἐξορκίζω σε κατὰ τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ζῶντος ἵνα ἡμῖν εἴπῃς εἰ σὺ εἶ ὁ χριστὸς ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ.
64Jesus said to him, "You have said it. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven."
λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Σὺ εἶπας· πλὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ἀπʼ ἄρτι ὄψεσθε τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καθήμενον ἐκ δεξιῶν τῆς δυνάμεως καὶ ἐρχόμενον ἐπὶ τῶν νεφελῶν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ.
65Then the high priest tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! Why do we need any more witnesses? You have just heard the blasphemy.
τότε ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς διέρρηξεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ⸀λέγων· Ἐβλασφήμησεν· τί ἔτι χρείαν ἔχομεν μαρτύρων; ἴδε νῦν ἠκούσατε τὴν ⸀βλασφημίαν·
66What is your verdict?" They answered, "He deserves death."
τί ὑμῖν δοκεῖ; οἱ δὲ ἀποκριθέντες εἶπαν· Ἔνοχος θανάτου ἐστίν.
53They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes assembled.
Καὶ ἀπήγαγον τὸν Ἰησοῦν πρὸς τὸν ἀρχιερέα, καὶ ⸀συνέρχονται πάντες οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς.
54Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards, warming himself at the fire.
καὶ ὁ Πέτρος ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ ἕως ἔσω εἰς τὴν αὐλὴν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως καὶ ἦν συγκαθήμενος μετὰ τῶν ὑπηρετῶν καὶ θερμαινόμενος πρὸς τὸ φῶς.
55The chief priests and the whole council were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they found none.
οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ ὅλον τὸ συνέδριον ἐζήτουν κατὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ μαρτυρίαν εἰς τὸ θανατῶσαι αὐτόν, καὶ οὐχ ηὕρισκον·
56Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.
πολλοὶ γὰρ ἐψευδομαρτύρουν κατʼ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἴσαι αἱ μαρτυρίαι οὐκ ἦσαν.
57Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him:
καί τινες ἀναστάντες ἐψευδομαρτύρουν κατʼ αὐτοῦ λέγοντες
58"We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.'"
ὅτι Ἡμεῖς ἠκούσαμεν αὐτοῦ λέγοντος ὅτι Ἐγὼ καταλύσω τὸν ναὸν τοῦτον τὸν χειροποίητον καὶ διὰ τριῶν ἡμερῶν ἄλλον ἀχειροποίητον οἰκοδομήσω·
59Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
καὶ οὐδὲ οὕτως ἴση ἦν ἡ μαρτυρία αὐτῶν.
60Then the high priest stood up before them and questioned Jesus: "Have you no answer? What is this testimony these men bring against you?"
καὶ ἀναστὰς ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς εἰς μέσον ἐπηρώτησεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν λέγων· Οὐκ ἀποκρίνῃ οὐδέν; τί οὗτοί σου καταμαρτυροῦσιν;
61But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest questioned him: "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"
ὁ δὲ ἐσιώπα καὶ ⸂οὐκ ἀπεκρίνατο οὐδέν⸃. πάλιν ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς ἐπηρώτα αὐτὸν καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ· Σὺ εἶ ὁ χριστὸς ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ εὐλογητοῦ;
62"I am," said Jesus, "and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven."
ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Ἐγώ εἰμι, καὶ ὄψεσθε τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκ δεξιῶν καθήμενον τῆς δυνάμεως καὶ ἐρχόμενον μετὰ τῶν νεφελῶν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ.
63At this the high priest tore his garments and said, "Why do we need any more witnesses?
ὁ δὲ ἀρχιερεὺς διαρρήξας τοὺς χιτῶνας αὐτοῦ λέγει· Τί ἔτι χρείαν ἔχομεν μαρτύρων;
64You have heard the blasphemy. What is your judgment?" And they all condemned him as deserving death.
ἠκούσατε τῆς βλασφημίας· τί ὑμῖν φαίνεται; οἱ δὲ πάντες κατέκριναν αὐτὸν ⸂ἔνοχον εἶναι⸃ θανάτου.
Jesus is sent to Pilate
After the council had found Jesus guilty, they brought him to the Roman governor Pontius Pilate to have a death sentence carried out.
1When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.
Πρωΐας δὲ γενομένης συμβούλιον ἔλαβον πάντες οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι τοῦ λαοῦ κατὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ὥστε θανατῶσαι αὐτόν·
2They bound him, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate the governor.
καὶ δήσαντες αὐτὸν ἀπήγαγον καὶ ⸀παρέδωκαν Πιλάτῳ τῷ ἡγεμόνι.
28Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters. It was early morning, and they did not enter the headquarters themselves, so that they would not be defiled but could eat the Passover.
Ἄγουσιν οὖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ Καϊάφα εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον· ἦν δὲ πρωΐ· καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐκ εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον, ἵνα μὴ μιανθῶσιν ⸀ἀλλὰ φάγωσιν τὸ πάσχα.
29So Pilate came out to them and said, "What charge do you bring against this man?"
ἐξῆλθεν οὖν ὁ Πιλᾶτος ⸀ἔξω πρὸς αὐτοὺς καὶ ⸀φησίν· Τίνα κατηγορίαν φέρετε ⸀κατὰ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου;
30They answered, "If he were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you."
ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ· Εἰ μὴ ἦν οὗτος ⸂κακὸν ποιῶν⸃, οὐκ ἄν σοι παρεδώκαμεν αὐτόν.
31Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law." The Jews answered, "We are not permitted to put anyone to death."
εἶπεν οὖν αὐτοῖς ⸀ὁ Πιλᾶτος· Λάβετε αὐτὸν ὑμεῖς, καὶ κατὰ τὸν νόμον ὑμῶν κρίνατε αὐτόν. ⸀εἶπον αὐτῷ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι· Ἡμῖν οὐκ ἔξεστιν ἀποκτεῖναι οὐδένα·
Caiaphas' father-in-law Annas interrogates Jesus
Jesus was first brought to Annas, who was Caiaphas' father-in-law and former high priest, before being sent on to Caiaphas.
12Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officers arrested Jesus and bound him.
Ἡ οὖν σπεῖρα καὶ ὁ χιλίαρχος καὶ οἱ ὑπηρέται τῶν Ἰουδαίων συνέλαβον τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἔδησαν αὐτὸν
13They brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.
καὶ ⸀ἤγαγον πρὸς Ἅνναν πρῶτον· ἦν γὰρ πενθερὸς τοῦ Καϊάφα, ὃς ἦν ἀρχιερεὺς τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἐκείνου·
14Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was better for one man to die for the people.
ἦν δὲ Καϊάφας ὁ συμβουλεύσας τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις ὅτι συμφέρει ἕνα ἄνθρωπον ⸀ἀποθανεῖν ὑπὲρ τοῦ λαοῦ.
19Then the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
Ὁ οὖν ἀρχιερεὺς ἠρώτησεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν περὶ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ περὶ τῆς διδαχῆς αὐτοῦ.
20Jesus answered him, "I have spoken openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.
ἀπεκρίθη ⸀αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς· Ἐγὼ παρρησίᾳ ⸀λελάληκα τῷ κόσμῳ· ἐγὼ πάντοτε ἐδίδαξα ἐν συναγωγῇ καὶ ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ, ὅπου ⸀πάντες οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι συνέρχονται, καὶ ἐν κρυπτῷ ἐλάλησα οὐδέν·
21Why do you question me? Question those who heard what I said to them. Look, these men know what I said.
τί με ⸂ἐρωτᾷς; ἐρώτησον⸃ τοὺς ἀκηκοότας τί ἐλάλησα αὐτοῖς· ἴδε οὗτοι οἴδασιν ἃ εἶπον ἐγώ.
22When he said this, one of the officers standing nearby struck Jesus in the face and said, "Is that how you answer the high priest?"
ταῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ εἰπόντος εἷς ⸂παρεστηκὼς τῶν ὑπηρετῶν⸃ ἔδωκεν ῥάπισμα τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰπών· Οὕτως ἀποκρίνῃ τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ;
23Jesus replied, "If I said something wrong, testify to what was wrong. But if I spoke rightly, why do you strike me?"
ἀπεκρίθη ⸀αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς· Εἰ κακῶς ἐλάλησα, μαρτύρησον περὶ τοῦ κακοῦ· εἰ δὲ καλῶς, τί με δέρεις;
24Then Annas sent him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.
ἀπέστειλεν ⸀οὖν αὐτὸν ὁ Ἅννας δεδεμένον πρὸς Καϊάφαν τὸν ἀρχιερέα.
Persecution of the apostles
Caiaphas was present when Peter and John were brought before the Jewish council after healing a lame man at the temple, and he tried to stop preaching in Jesus' name.
1While they were still speaking to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple guard, and the Sadducees came up to them,
Λαλούντων δὲ αὐτῶν πρὸς τὸν λαὸν ἐπέστησαν αὐτοῖς οἱ ⸀ἱερεῖς καὶ ὁ στρατηγὸς τοῦ ἱεροῦ καὶ οἱ Σαδδουκαῖοι,
2greatly annoyed that they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
διαπονούμενοι διὰ τὸ διδάσκειν αὐτοὺς τὸν λαὸν καὶ καταγγέλλειν ἐν τῷ Ἰησοῦ τὴν ἀνάστασιν ⸂τὴν ἐκ⸃ νεκρῶν,
3They seized them and put them in custody until the next day, since it was already evening.
καὶ ἐπέβαλον αὐτοῖς τὰς χεῖρας καὶ ἔθεντο εἰς τήρησιν εἰς τὴν αὔριον, ἦν γὰρ ἑσπέρα ἤδη.
4But many who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.
πολλοὶ δὲ τῶν ἀκουσάντων τὸν λόγον ἐπίστευσαν, καὶ ἐγενήθη ⸀ὁ ἀριθμὸς τῶν ἀνδρῶν ⸀ὡς χιλιάδες πέντε.
5The next day the rulers, the elders, and the scribes gathered in Jerusalem,
Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐπὶ τὴν αὔριον συναχθῆναι αὐτῶν τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ ⸀τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους καὶ ⸁τοὺς γραμματεῖς ⸀ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ
6along with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and all who belonged to the high priest's family.
(καὶ ⸂Ἅννας ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς καὶ Καϊάφας καὶ Ἰωάννης καὶ Ἀλέξανδρος⸃ καὶ ὅσοι ἦσαν ἐκ γένους ἀρχιερατικοῦ),
7They made them stand in their midst and questioned them: "By what power or in what name did you do this?"
καὶ στήσαντες αὐτοὺς ἐν ⸀τῷ μέσῳ ἐπυνθάνοντο· Ἐν ποίᾳ δυνάμει ἢ ἐν ποίῳ ὀνόματι ἐποιήσατε τοῦτο ὑμεῖς;
8Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Rulers of the people and elders,
τότε Πέτρος πλησθεὶς πνεύματος ἁγίου εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Ἄρχοντες τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ ⸀πρεσβύτεροι,
9if we are being examined today about a good deed done for a crippled man and how he was healed,
εἰ ἡμεῖς σήμερον ἀνακρινόμεθα ἐπὶ εὐεργεσίᾳ ἀνθρώπου ἀσθενοῦς, ἐν τίνι οὗτος σέσωσται,
10then let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel: it is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified and whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.
γνωστὸν ἔστω πᾶσιν ὑμῖν καὶ παντὶ τῷ λαῷ Ἰσραὴλ ὅτι ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ Ναζωραίου, ὃν ὑμεῖς ἐσταυρώσατε, ὃν ὁ θεὸς ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν, ἐν τούτῳ οὗτος παρέστηκεν ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν ὑγιής.
11He is the stone that you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.
οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ λίθος ὁ ἐξουθενηθεὶς ὑφʼ ὑμῶν τῶν ⸀οἰκοδόμων, ὁ γενόμενος εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας.
12And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."
καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἄλλῳ οὐδενὶ ἡ σωτηρία, ⸀οὐδὲ γὰρ ὄνομά ἐστιν ἕτερον ⸂ὑπὸ τὸν οὐρανὸν⸃ τὸ δεδομένον ἐν ἀνθρώποις ἐν ᾧ δεῖ σωθῆναι ἡμᾶς.
13When they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated, ordinary men, they were amazed, and they recognized that these men had been with Jesus.
Θεωροῦντες δὲ τὴν τοῦ Πέτρου παρρησίαν καὶ Ἰωάννου καὶ καταλαβόμενοι ὅτι ἄνθρωποι ἀγράμματοί εἰσιν καὶ ἰδιῶται, ἐθαύμαζον, ἐπεγίνωσκόν τε αὐτοὺς ὅτι σὺν τῷ Ἰησοῦ ἦσαν,
14And seeing the man who had been healed standing there with them, they had nothing to say in reply.
τόν ⸀τε ἄνθρωπον βλέποντες σὺν αὐτοῖς ἑστῶτα τὸν τεθεραπευμένον οὐδὲν εἶχον ἀντειπεῖν.
15So they ordered them to leave the council and conferred with one another,
κελεύσαντες δὲ αὐτοὺς ἔξω τοῦ συνεδρίου ἀπελθεῖν συνέβαλλον πρὸς ἀλλήλους
16saying, "What shall we do with these men? For it is plain to everyone living in Jerusalem that a remarkable sign has been done through them, and we cannot deny it.
λέγοντες· Τί ⸀ποιήσωμεν τοῖς ἀνθρώποις τούτοις; ὅτι μὲν γὰρ γνωστὸν σημεῖον γέγονεν διʼ αὐτῶν πᾶσιν τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν Ἰερουσαλὴμ φανερόν, καὶ οὐ δυνάμεθα ⸀ἀρνεῖσθαι·
17But to keep it from spreading further among the people, let us warn them never again to speak to anyone in this name."
ἀλλʼ ἵνα μὴ ἐπὶ πλεῖον διανεμηθῇ εἰς τὸν λαόν, ⸀ἀπειλησώμεθα αὐτοῖς μηκέτι λαλεῖν ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι τούτῳ μηδενὶ ἀνθρώπων.
18So they called them in and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
καὶ καλέσαντες αὐτοὺς παρήγγειλαν ⸀τὸ καθόλου μὴ φθέγγεσθαι μηδὲ διδάσκειν ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Ἰησοῦ.
The apostles are imprisoned and interrogated again
The high priest and his supporters imprisoned the apostles out of jealousy, but an angel freed them. They were still brought before the council again.
17Then the high priest and all who were with him, that is, the party of the Sadducees, rose up, filled with jealousy.
Ἀναστὰς δὲ ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς καὶ πάντες οἱ σὺν αὐτῷ, ἡ οὖσα αἵρεσις τῶν Σαδδουκαίων, ἐπλήσθησαν ζήλου
18They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.
καὶ ἐπέβαλον τὰς ⸀χεῖρας ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀποστόλους καὶ ἔθεντο αὐτοὺς ἐν τηρήσει δημοσίᾳ.
19But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison, led them out, and said,
ἄγγελος δὲ κυρίου ⸀διὰ νυκτὸς ⸀ἤνοιξε τὰς θύρας τῆς φυλακῆς ἐξαγαγών τε αὐτοὺς εἶπεν·
20"Go, stand in the temple and tell the people the whole message of this life."
Πορεύεσθε καὶ σταθέντες λαλεῖτε ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ τῷ λαῷ πάντα τὰ ῥήματα τῆς ζωῆς ταύτης.
21So at daybreak they entered the temple and began to teach. Meanwhile the high priest and those with him arrived, called together the Council—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail to have the apostles brought in.
ἀκούσαντες δὲ εἰσῆλθον ὑπὸ τὸν ὄρθρον εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν καὶ ἐδίδασκον. Παραγενόμενος δὲ ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς καὶ οἱ σὺν αὐτῷ συνεκάλεσαν τὸ συνέδριον καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γερουσίαν τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ, καὶ ἀπέστειλαν εἰς τὸ δεσμωτήριον ἀχθῆναι αὐτούς.
22But when the officers arrived, they did not find them in the prison, so they went back and reported,
οἱ δὲ ⸂παραγενόμενοι ὑπηρέται⸃ οὐχ εὗρον αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ, ἀναστρέψαντες δὲ ἀπήγγειλαν
23"We found the jail securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them, we found no one inside."
λέγοντες ὅτι ⸀Τὸ δεσμωτήριον εὕρομεν κεκλεισμένον ἐν πάσῃ ἀσφαλείᾳ καὶ τοὺς φύλακας ἑστῶτας ⸀ἐπὶ τῶν θυρῶν, ἀνοίξαντες δὲ ἔσω οὐδένα εὕρομεν.
24When the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard this, they were at a loss, wondering what would come of it.
ὡς δὲ ἤκουσαν τοὺς λόγους τούτους ὅ ⸀τε στρατηγὸς τοῦ ἱεροῦ καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς, διηπόρουν περὶ αὐτῶν τί ἂν γένοιτο τοῦτο.
25Then someone came and reported to them, "Look, the men you put in prison are standing in the temple, teaching the people!"
παραγενόμενος δέ τις ἀπήγγειλεν αὐτοῖς ὅτι Ἰδοὺ οἱ ἄνδρες οὓς ἔθεσθε ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ εἰσὶν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἑστῶτες καὶ διδάσκοντες τὸν λαόν.
26So the captain went with his officers and brought them in—without force, for they were afraid the people would stone them.
τότε ἀπελθὼν ὁ στρατηγὸς σὺν τοῖς ὑπηρέταις ⸀ἤγαγεν αὐτούς, οὐ μετὰ βίας, ἐφοβοῦντο γὰρ τὸν λαόν, ⸀μὴ λιθασθῶσιν.
27They brought them in and made them stand before the Council, and the high priest questioned them:
Ἀγαγόντες δὲ αὐτοὺς ἔστησαν ἐν τῷ συνεδρίῳ. καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτοὺς ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς
28"We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name. Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man's blood upon us."
⸀λέγων· Παραγγελίᾳ παρηγγείλαμεν ὑμῖν μὴ διδάσκειν ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι τούτῳ, καὶ ἰδοὺ πεπληρώκατε τὴν Ἰερουσαλὴμ τῆς διδαχῆς ὑμῶν, καὶ βούλεσθε ἐπαγαγεῖν ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς τὸ αἷμα τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου.
