Mentioned among priests with foreign wives

Magpiaš was one of the priests who had taken foreign wives in violation of God's law and was confronted about this during Ezra's reforms.

18Among the descendants of the priests, these were found to have married foreign women: from the sons of Jeshua son of Jozadak, and his brothers—Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah.
19They pledged themselves to send away their wives, and being guilty, they presented a ram from the flock as their guilt offering.
20From the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah.
21From the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah.
22From the sons of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah.

Participation in the renewal of the covenant

Magpiaš was among those who committed to following God's law and sending away their foreign wives as part of the people's repentance.

1While Ezra was praying and making this confession, weeping and lying prostrate before the house of God, a very large assembly of Israel gathered around him—men, women, and children—for the people were weeping bitterly.
2Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, one of the descendants of Elam, spoke up and said to Ezra: "We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the peoples of the land. Yet even now there is hope for Israel in spite of this.
3So let us now make a covenant with our God to send away all these women along with their children, according to the counsel of the Lord and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God. Let it be done according to the Law.
4Rise up, for this matter rests on you, and we stand with you. Take courage and act."
5So Ezra rose and made the leading priests, the Levites, and all Israel swear to do as had been said—and they took the oath.

Mentioned in Nehemiah's list

Magpiaš is mentioned in the book of Nehemiah among those who sealed the covenant with God during the great renewal of promises.

1In view of all this, we are entering into a binding agreement, put in writing; and on the sealed document are the names of our officials, our Levites, and our priests.
2On the sealed document were: Nehemiah the governor, son of Hacaliah, and Zedekiah,
3Seraiah, Azariah, Jeremiah,

4Pashhur, Amariah, Malchijah,

5Hattush, Shebaniah, Malluch,

6Harim, Meremoth, Obadiah,

7Daniel, Ginnethon, Baruch,

8Meshullam, Abijah, Mijamin,

Ezra's reading of the law

In connection with the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls, the priests, including Magpiaš, took part in reading God's law to the people.

1Then all the people gathered as one to the square in front of the Water Gate, and they asked Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded Israel.
2So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly—men and women and all who could understand what they heard.
3He read from it, facing the square before the Water Gate, from daybreak until midday, to the men and the women and all who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law.
4Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform built for the occasion. Beside him on his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; and on his left, Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.
5Ezra opened the book in full view of all the people, for he stood above them; and as he opened it, all the people stood up.
6Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and all the people lifted their hands and answered, "Amen! Amen!" Then they bowed down and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.
7And Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah—the Levites—explained the Law to the people while they remained in their places.

The Dedication of the Wall of Jerusalem

The priests, including Magpiash, took part in the solemn dedication of the rebuilt city wall in Jerusalem under Nehemiah's leadership.

31Then I brought the leaders of Judah up onto the wall and appointed two great choirs of thanksgiving. One went to the right along the top of the wall toward the Dung Gate,
32and behind them went Hoshaiah and half the leaders of Judah,
33along with Azariah, Ezra, Meshullam,
34Judah, Benjamin, Shemaiah, and Jeremiah,
35and some of the priests' sons with trumpets: Zechariah son of Jonathan, son of Shemaiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Micaiah, son of Zaccur, son of Asaph,
36and his kinsmen Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah, and Hanani, with the musical instruments of David the man of God; and Ezra the scribe went before them.
37At the Fountain Gate they went straight up the steps of the city of David, by the ascent of the wall, and passed above the house of David to the Water Gate on the east.
38The second choir of thanksgiving went to the left, and I followed it with half the people, along the top of the wall above the Tower of the Ovens to the Broad Wall,
39then above the Gate of Ephraim, past the Old Gate and the Fish Gate, the Tower of Hananel and the Tower of the Hundred, to the Sheep Gate; and they came to a halt at the Gate of the Guard.
40So the two choirs of thanksgiving took their places in the house of God, and I with them, along with half the officials,
41and the priests Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah, with trumpets,
42and Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malchijah, Elam, and Ezer. The singers sang out, with Jezrahiah as their director.
