Nahash

King of the Ammonites

Le royaume uniKingWarriorc. 1050–1000 BC

Nahash was the king over the Ammonites who threatened the city of Jabesh in Gilead with gouging out the right eye of all its inhabitants. His cruel ultimatum led Saul to gather Israel for battle and win a decisive victory. Nahash is also mentioned later in connection with kindness toward David, which led to diplomatic contact between the two kingdoms.

The Siege of Jabesh in Gilead

Nahash besieged Jabesh in Gilead and demanded that all its inhabitants let him gouge out their right eye as a disgrace over all Israel.

1Nahash the Ammonite came up and laid siege to Jabesh Gilead. All the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you."
2But Nahash the Ammonite answered them, "I will make a treaty with you on one condition: that I gouge out the right eye of every one of you and so bring disgrace on all Israel."

Jabesh Asks for Time

The people of Jabesh asked for seven days to send messengers throughout Israel to ask for help, and Nahash agreed to this.

3The elders of Jabesh said to him, "Give us seven days, so we can send messengers throughout the territory of Israel. If no one comes to save us, we will surrender to you."
4When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and reported these things in the hearing of the people, all the people wept aloud.

Saul's Victory Over Nahash

Saul gathered the army of Israel and defeated the Ammonites under Nahash in a surprise attack at Jabesh, which strengthened Saul's kingdom.

11The next day Saul divided his men into three companies. During the last watch of the night they broke into the enemy camp and struck down the Ammonites until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
12Then the people said to Samuel, "Who was it that asked, 'Shall Saul reign over us?' Hand these men over, and we will put them to death."
13But Saul said, "No one will be put to death today, for this is the day the LORD has brought deliverance to Israel."

Nahash's Kindness to David

Nahash showed kindness to David, which David remembered and wished to repay when Nahash died.

1Some time later the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun became king in his place.
2David said, "I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, just as his father showed kindness to me." So David sent a delegation of his servants to console him over his father. But when David's servants arrived in the land of the Ammonites,

David's Messengers to Hanun

When Nahash died, David sent messengers to his son Hanun to comfort him, but Hanun humiliated them, leading to war.

1Some time later the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun became king in his place.
2David said, "I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, just as his father showed kindness to me." So David sent a delegation of his servants to console him over his father. But when David's servants arrived in the land of the Ammonites,
3the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun their lord, "Do you really think David is honoring your father by sending you men to console you? Hasn't David sent his servants to you to explore the city, to spy it out and overthrow it?"
4So Hanun seized David's servants, shaved off half of each man's beard, cut their garments in half at the buttocks, and sent them away.

Parallel Account in Chronicles

The event of David sending messengers to Hanun, the son of Nahash, is also recorded in 1 Chronicles, confirming the friendly relationship between David and Nahash.

1Some time later Nahash king of the Ammonites died, and his son became king in his place.
2David said, "I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me." So David sent messengers to console him over his father. But when David's servants came to Hanun in the land of the Ammonites to console him,
3the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun, "Do you really think David is honoring your father by sending you men to console you? Haven't his servants come to you to explore the land, to overthrow it, and to spy it out?"
