The Journey to Moab

Due to a famine, Naomi went with her husband Elimelech and sons Mahlon and Chilion to Moab.

1In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land, and a man from Bethlehem in Judah went to live for a time in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons.
2The man's name was Elimelech, his wife's name was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah. They came to the country of Moab and settled there.

Loss and Grief

Elimelech died, and after ten years both sons also died. Naomi was left with her Moabite daughters-in-law.

3Then Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died, and she was left with her two sons.
4The sons married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. They lived there about ten years,
5and then both Mahlon and Chilion died as well, so the woman was left without her two children and without her husband.

Return to Bethlehem

Naomi decided to return home and asked her daughters-in-law to stay in Moab. Orpah left, but Ruth refused to abandon her.

6Then she set out with her daughters-in-law to return from the country of Moab, for she had heard there that the LORD had come to the aid of his people and given them food.
8But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, "Go back, each of you, to your mother's house. May the LORD show you kindness, as you have shown to the dead and to me.
14At this they wept aloud again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, but Ruth clung to her.
16But Ruth said, "Do not urge me to leave you or to turn back from following you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God.
17Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me ever so severely if anything but death separates you and me."
18When Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more.

The Bitterness

In Bethlehem, Naomi asked the people to call her Mara ('the bitter'), for the Lord had made her life bitter.

19So the two of them went on until they came to Bethlehem. And when they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred, and the women said, "Can this be Naomi?"
20"Do not call me Naomi," she told them. "Call me Mara,* because the Almighty has made my life very bitter. *Footnote: Naomi means "pleasant"; Mara means "bitter."
21I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi? The LORD has afflicted me;* the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me." *Footnote: Or "the LORD has testified against me."

Ruth's Advice

Naomi gave Ruth wise advice to go to Boaz at the threshing floor and ask him to act as her kinsman-redeemer.

1Then Naomi, her mother-in-law, said to her, "My daughter, should I not look for a home for you, where you will be well provided for?
2Now Boaz, whose young women you have worked with, is a relative of ours. Tonight he will be winnowing barley at the threshing floor.
3So wash and anoint yourself, put on your best clothes, and go down to the threshing floor. But do not let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking.
4When he lies down, note the place where he lies. Then go, uncover his feet, and lie down. He will tell you what to do."
5"I will do everything you say," Ruth answered.
