Oholah

Samaria's Allegorical Sister

Aussi appelé : Oholah

Le royaume diviséWise man

Oholah is an allegorical figure in the book of Ezekiel representing Samaria, the capital of the Northern Kingdom (Israel). She is portrayed as an unfaithful woman who committed spiritual adultery by seeking alliances with Assyria and Egypt instead of trusting in God. Through this metaphor, the prophet Ezekiel condemns the idolatry and political infidelity of the Northern Kingdom.

Oholah and Oholibah Introduced

Ezekiel presents two sisters, Oholah (Samaria) and Oholibah (Jerusalem), both of whom engaged in prostitution in Egypt during their youth. They represent the two kingdoms of Israel.

1The word of the LORD came to me:
2Son of man, there were two women, daughters of the same mother.
3They played the whore in Egypt; in their youth they played the whore. There their breasts were fondled, and there their maiden breasts were handled.
4Their names were Oholah, the elder, and Oholibah, her sister. They became mine and bore sons and daughters. As for their names: Samaria is Oholah, and Jerusalem is Oholibah.

Oholah's Adultery with Assyria

Oholah (Samaria) was unfaithful to the Lord by seeking political and religious alliances with Assyria. She lusted after Assyrian warriors and officers and adopted their idolatry.

5But Oholah played the whore while she was mine. She burned with lust for her lovers, the Assyrians, her neighbors—
6governors and commanders dressed in blue, all of them handsome young men, cavalrymen mounted on horses.
7She gave herself as a whore to them, the choicest men of Assyria, every one of them; and with all whom she lusted after she defiled herself with their idols.
8Nor did she give up the whoring she began in Egypt, for in her youth men had slept with her, had handled her young breasts and poured out their lust on her.

Oholah's Idolatry from Egypt

Oholah never abandoned her promiscuity from Egypt, which she had practiced in her youth. She continued to turn to pagan nations for support instead of turning to God.

8Nor did she give up the whoring she began in Egypt, for in her youth men had slept with her, had handled her young breasts and poured out their lust on her.
9Therefore I handed her over to her lovers, to the Assyrians she lusted after.

God's Judgment on Oholah

God handed Oholah over into the hands of her lovers, the Assyrians, whom she had desired. They exposed her, took her sons and daughters, and killed her with the sword—a prophetic description of Samaria's fall in 722 BC.

9Therefore I handed her over to her lovers, to the Assyrians she lusted after.
10They stripped her naked, seized her sons and daughters, and killed her with the sword. She became a byword among women, and judgment was carried out on her.

Oholah as a Warning to Oholibah

Despite the fact that Oholibah (Jerusalem) saw her sister Oholah's fate, she did not learn from it but became even more corrupt in her unfaithfulness. Oholah's downfall served as a warning which Jerusalem ignored.

11Her sister Oholibah saw all this, yet in her lust she was even more corrupt than her sister, and her whoring surpassed her sister's.
12She lusted after the Assyrians—governors and commanders, her neighbors, splendidly dressed, cavalrymen mounted on horses, all of them handsome young men.
13And I saw that she had defiled herself; both of them had gone the same way.

The final judgment on both sisters

God declares that both sisters will be judged for their sins. Righteous men shall judge them according to the law for adultery and bloodshed, as a warning against idolatry and unfaithfulness to the Lord.

36The LORD said to me: Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then confront them with their abominations.
37For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands. They committed adultery with their idols, and they even offered up the children they had borne to me as food for them.
38And this too they did to me: on that same day they defiled my sanctuary and profaned my Sabbaths.
39On the very day they slaughtered their children for their idols, they entered my sanctuary and profaned it. That is what they did inside my house.
45But righteous men will pass sentence on them—the sentence for adulteresses and for women who shed blood—because they are adulteresses and blood is on their hands.
46For this is what the Lord GOD says: Bring up an assembly against them and hand them over to terror and plunder.
47The assembly will stone them and cut them down with their swords. They will kill their sons and daughters and burn their houses down.
48So I will put an end to lewdness in the land, and all women will take warning and will not act as you have.
49You will be repaid for your lewdness and will bear the guilt of your idolatry. Then you will know that I am the Lord GOD.
