Onan marries Tamar
After Onan's older brother Er died, Judah commanded Onan to marry the widow Tamar to fulfill his duty as a brother-in-law and raise offspring for his brother.
8Then Judah said to Onan, "Go to your brother's wife and do your duty as a brother-in-law, so that you may raise up offspring for your brother."
Onan refuses to fulfill his duty as a brother-in-law
Onan knew that the child would not be counted as his own, so he spilled his seed on the ground every time he went in to Tamar, to avoid giving his brother an heir.
9But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his own, so whenever he slept with his brother's wife, he spilled his seed on the ground rather than give offspring to his brother.

Onan's death
What Onan did was evil in the Lord's sight, and the Lord also caused him to die because of his disobedience and selfishness.
10What he did was evil in the LORD's sight, so the LORD put him to death as well.
