Zacchaeus
The Tax Collector in the Tree
Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector in Jericho, wealthy but despised by the people for collaborating with the Romans. He was short in stature and climbed up into a sycamore-fig tree to see Jesus. Jesus invited himself to his home, which led to Zacchaeus's radical repentance and generosity.

In the Sycamore-Fig Tree
Zacchaeus climbed up in a tree to see Jesus because he was short in stature.
1Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.
2Now there was a man named Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector, and he was rich.
3He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he could not because of the crowd, since he was short.
4So he ran on ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, since Jesus was about to pass that way.
Jesus Invites Himself
Jesus looked up and said that he must stay at Zacchaeus's house today.
5When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry down, for today I must stay at your house."
6So he hurried down and welcomed him with joy.
7When they all saw it, they began to grumble, "He has gone in to stay with a sinful man."
The Repentance
Zacchaeus promised to give half to the poor and repay fourfold anyone he had cheated.
8But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord, I am giving half of what I own to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone of anything, I am paying it back four times over."
9Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he too is a son of Abraham.
10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."
