Saul's Genealogy and Royal Lineage

Through the lineage Seror – Abiel – Kish – Saul, the tribe of Benjamin became the tribe that gave Israel its first king.

1There was a man from Benjamin whose name was Kish son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, son of a Benjaminite; he was a man of standing.
2He had a son named Saul, young and handsome. There was no one among the Israelites more handsome than he; he stood head and shoulders above all the people.

Kish Searches for the Donkeys

Saul's father Kish, who was a descendant of Zeruor, sent his son Saul out to look for lost donkeys, which led to Saul's meeting with the prophet Samuel.

3Now the donkeys belonging to Kish, Saul's father, had strayed off, and Kish said to his son Saul, "Take one of the servants with you and go look for the donkeys."

Saul Anointed as King

As part of God's plan, Saul, a descendant of Zeruor, was anointed by the prophet Samuel to become Israel's first king.

1Then Samuel took a flask of oil, poured it on Saul's head, and kissed him. He said, "Has not the LORD anointed you ruler over his inheritance?

The Role of the Tribe of Benjamin in Israel's History

Zeruor belonged to the tribe of Benjamin, one of the smallest tribes in Israel, yet it was the tribe chosen to provide the nation with its first king.

21Saul answered, "Am I not a Benjaminite, from the smallest of the tribes of Israel, and is not my clan the least of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin? Why do you speak to me like this?"
