Sheshan was a man from the tribe of Judah who had no sons, only daughters. He gave his daughter to his Egyptian servant Jarha as a wife, and through this connection the family line continued. He is mentioned in the genealogies of Chronicles.

Sheshan is mentioned in the genealogy of the tribe of Judah as a descendant of Jerahmeel. He had no sons, but he had daughters.

Sheshan's Egyptian Servant Jarha

Sheshan had an Egyptian servant named Jarha, to whom he gave his daughter as a wife so that the family line would continue.

34Now Sheshan had no sons, only daughters. He had an Egyptian servant named Jarha,
וְלֹֽא־הָיָ֧ה לְשֵׁשָׁ֛ן בָּנִ֖ים כִּ֣י אִם־בָּנ֑וֹת וּלְשֵׁשָׁ֛ן עֶ֥בֶד מִצְרִ֖י וּשְׁמ֥וֹ יַרְחָֽע׃ ‬
35and Sheshan gave his daughter in marriage to his servant Jarha, and she bore him Attai.
וַיִּתֵּ֨ן שֵׁשָׁ֧ן אֶת־בִּתּ֛וֹ לְיַרְחָ֥ע עַבְדּ֖וֹ לְאִשָּׁ֑ה וַתֵּ֥לֶד ל֖וֹ אֶת־עַתָּֽי׃ ‬

Attai is Born

Sheshan's daughter and Jarha had a son named Attai, who carried on the family line. This shows that foreigners could be incorporated into Israel's lineage.

35and Sheshan gave his daughter in marriage to his servant Jarha, and she bore him Attai.
וַיִּתֵּ֨ן שֵׁשָׁ֧ן אֶת־בִּתּ֛וֹ לְיַרְחָ֥ע עַבְדּ֖וֹ לְאִשָּׁ֑ה וַתֵּ֥לֶד ל֖וֹ אֶת־עַתָּֽי׃ ‬
36Attai fathered Nathan, and Nathan fathered Zabad.
וְעַתַּי֙ הֹלִ֣יד אֶת־נָתָ֔ן וְנָתָ֖ן הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־זָבָֽד׃ ‬

The Lineage After Sheshan

Through Attai, Sheshan's lineage continued for many generations, all the way to important figures in the tribe of Judah.

36Attai fathered Nathan, and Nathan fathered Zabad.
וְעַתַּי֙ הֹלִ֣יד אֶת־נָתָ֔ן וְנָתָ֖ן הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־זָבָֽד׃ ‬
37Zabad fathered Ephlal, and Ephlal fathered Obed.
וְזָבָד֙ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־אֶפְלָ֔ל וְאֶפְלָ֖ל הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־עוֹבֵֽד׃ ‬
38Obed fathered Jehu, and Jehu fathered Azariah.
וְעוֹבֵד֙ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־יֵה֔וּא וְיֵה֖וּא הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־עֲזַרְיָֽה׃ ‬
39Azariah fathered Helez, and Helez fathered Eleasah.
וַעֲזַרְיָה֙ הֹלִ֣יד אֶת־חָ֔לֶץ וְחֶ֖לֶץ הֹלִ֥יד אֶת־אֶלְעָשָֽׂה׃ ‬
40Eleasah fathered Sismai, and Sismai fathered Shallum.
וְאֶלְעָשָׂה֙ הֹלִ֣יד אֶת־סִֽסְמָ֔י וְסִסְמַ֖י הֹלִ֥יד אֶת־שַׁלּֽוּם׃ ‬
41Shallum fathered Jekamiah, and Jekamiah fathered Elishama.
וְשַׁלּוּם֙ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־יְקַמְיָ֔ה וִֽיקַמְיָ֖ה הֹלִ֥יד אֶת־אֱלִישָׁמָֽע׃ ‬
